Student loan forgiveness or reduced payment options

And by the way, the student loan system ... as most institutions where money is made off of people's ignorance ... is a terrible racket. They do their best to gloss over all of the nasty stuff, preying upon the ignorant. It's hard for me to find fault with people who thought they were doing the right thing by pursuing education without the requisite knowledge of the industry -- why would an entrant know how sleazy things are before they signed on the dotted line? To the outside world, Aviation is shiny and respectable, full of honest, reputable professionals. Really! Believe it or not. Why would they suspect that they're being fed a sales pitch when they sit down in the flight school manager's office?

It's not just aviation, of course. Much of the education system is the same way. Sometimes we remind me of a pre-Ferenginar.

The system be broken, yarr.

With a few exceptions, however, there was no deceit in the way most reputable flight schools market their products. ATP is very upfront with their costs, and generally (from what I hear) delivers what they promise to deliver. Same with ERAU or other higher ed based flight schools. I have sympathy for the Tab Express or JetU people who paid for something and didn't get it because they paid, unknowingly, into a ponzi scheme. But if you got exactly what you paid for, then there should be absolutely no forgiveness, except in cases of gross marketing misconduct. But slapping a Kit Darby article on your homepage about pilot shortages is hardly gross misconduct.

This is not, btw, an attack on the OP - seems that, despite some poor life choices, he's being very candid about his situation - not that he doesn't want to pay his debt, he just can't. It would be interesting to hear from some who've visited this site and then decided NOT to pursue a hefty, life crushing loan as a result.

So people wish SLM would go away?

How about this...

Personally, in addition to other sources of funds for my flight training, I made the PERSONAL decision to take out a loan - regardless of the amount.

It is not SLM's fault that people signed up, took out a loan, and now that they were not responsible enough, are feeling the crushes of a loan obligation.

I want SLM to stick around so people who are responsible can get loans to finance their careers. It's a positive for those who are responsible enough to manage their finances in a smart way.

Ugh.

I don't wish my website to become a "nightstand hand towel" over some fracas started at a different website.

Cue Family Guy "Peter versus Rooster" clips.
