student has back issues

i have a student (intro) who recently retired and now wants to learn to fly. we discussed issues that some people run into on a medical exam, and he told me he has been on methadone for a while due to a back injury he sustained in a ditch he was working on collapsed. after 2 back surgeries, the only pain reliver that helps is methadone (probably not spelled right). are there any options for him. he loved the intro, is retired and realy wants to learn, but knows that the meds he takes are his only help to severe back pain.

looking for things like other meds that would be legal, thearpay you might suggest, etc. thanks in advance.

Methadone is disqualifying. I doubt he will be able to find anything else to help him enough that will allow him to fly.
