Narrative:
During night time U.S. mission at a village near Idlib, Syria, a helicopter developed a mechanical problem. It was forced to land and subsequently destroyed by U.S. forces.

Helicopters reportedly involved in the mission were AH-64E, MH-60 and MH-47Gs of 160th SOAR. Photos, reportedly from the scene, show a section of the tail of a Black Hawk helicopter with serial ending with '72'
 
I mean.....what's strange?

There's a lot of high-tech stuff on those birds. If it had a mech problem that couldn't be addressed expediently in the field, blowing it up makes sense.

I don't get what's sinister or weird here.

EDIT - they tried to destroy one of the damaged helos on the Bin Laden raid, too.

Meh. I don’t see a singular raid going after a singular objective as the ISIS leader here whom we were seeking for arrest or death, as meddling in Syria’s affairs. Anymore than the singular Bin Laden raid would’ve been akin to meddling in Pakistan’s affairs.

I mean, how would the US respond if overnight some Russian special forces made their way into AK or HI to take out what they perceived as a high value target (US citizen) and then left in the cover of night?
 
Am I really supposed to believe the narrative it was a 2 hr gun fight and then at the end end the terrorist blew a bomb up that took himself and his entire family (wife, kids, etc) all out? Or what about if a soldier shot at something that blew up, killing all those people? Where’s the proof about what happened, other than their version/narrative?

Not exactly the best history there.

I went to college with her, sharp girl, I had a feeling she would go far in journalism…

Last time under Biden, after the soldiers died in that Kabul attack, they carried an air strike out on a guy in a car who they said had explosives and was driving to take out US soldiers or interests.

They even said that post strike, there were explosions in the car that proved there were explosives.

Right.


Turns out, it was an aid worker, and his car had just water jugs. Never a threat to anyone. Just driving and then taken out by an air strike that killed him AND other civilians.

Whoops, “our bad.”

IDK, CC. We immolated hundreds of thousands of people during WWII, many of them “innocent” (And not counting the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki). You’re surely familiar with the Dresden and Tokyo raids, to name just two of many. Not asking you to embrace the same, but - to me - there will always be “collateral damage” in military action.

A different discussion to be had would be whether or not we are still “empire building” and how necessary the so-called precision strikes truly are to our safety and well-being as a nation.

I don’t personally know the answer to that.

I DO know that a lot of people every single day, in this country and many others, step into eternity through the fault of others and not by choices of their own making.

There is collateral damage in Kabul, other places, and most American cities that have nothing to do (or very little) with the people who die at the hand of others, be that our government and military or friends/neighbors/gang members/bad people who don’t give a damn about other human life within their sphere of choice and influence.

Got no answer, personally, just know it happens for ”good“ reasons and bad. YMMV.

For sure. There’s always innocent casualties in war.

I just question the necessity of it all. We’ve been so much in the Middle East that it’s sickening. And nothing really changes. Can’t argue we’re safer today than we were in the 80s, 90s, 00s, 10s, or today. I just don’t see it.

Russia tried Afghanistan, got their asses kicked, left to never return. At least it was a lesson learned.

We don’t seem to learn. I can’t help but note that terrorists never flew planes into buildings in Russia or China. And I can’t help but note that other world powers like China did not just attack ISIS in Syria.

I also don’t see someone sending thousands of soldiers on the ground (!) in eastern Ukraine. Ukraine isn’t even NATO.


What are we doing?!
