Still want to be an airline pilot?

However, I do love my current job and don't miss flying one bit.

Thought you said you did fly a couple posts back, now you say you don't miss it (which implies you don't fly anymore at least with any kind regularity) .... which is it?

Again, reserve your half-a$$ed judgements on airline flying until you've actually flown a line or two.

"They kind of bleed us out," the American Airlines captain said, on condition he not be identified for fear of losing his job. .....

"I thought I had turned those on," he recalled thinking. "I hadn't; I just wasn't as sharp. I'd lost my edge."

This is either a joke or the most melodramatic article on airline flying ever written.

That post was mostly a joke....

I wouldn't say I couldn't hack it...I was a very good pilot. I decided the turbulence in the industry wasn't my thing.

Flying a 210 at Flight Express would scare anyone away from the industry. I'm glad you're happy with your current situation, but judging the industry off of flying night freight in a 210 doesn't hold a lot of water IMO.

One thing I always remind myself is that I wouldn't be in my present situation if what happened previously in my life didn't happen. IOW, if you hadn't gone to FE you might not be where you are today.

Well he did apparently make up a few quotes so whose to say this one was accurate either?

I dont act as PIC anymore and don't wish to. I fly 1st observers seat only.

And only two judgements I made were that pilots once had a cushy job and $140k is plenty for an airline pilot.

Now come on, you mean to tell me pilots don't have egos?????

Now that's a bigoted statement if I ever saw one.

I'm a pilot.

Can anyone here who has spent more than five minutes with me, in person, possibly think I have a big ego?

Uhhhhhh, no.

Ah, I see so you're not responisble for the flight ... I see.

Easy to sit back and say someone elses job is easy or they shouldn't make "X" pay when you're not the one on the hook in your own job.

DE, I don't think it's jealousy I think it's guilt ...

Both half-a$$ed; and again who in the frackin' hell are YOU to say what someone else should or shouldn't make. Personally, I think you shouldn't make what you make. I mean I think sitting in an observers seat making what you make is a crime. You're only observing. You're not actually doing anything. You should make minimum wage and only because the federal law says so.

Don't like it, eh? Uniformed statements based on casual observations ...

But aren't I a pilot? :)

Trust me, LOTS of other professions have worse "God Complexes" than pilots are percieved to have. TaRUST me!

Still no response from the New York Times or Matthew Wald about pulling a "Stephen Glass" and manufacturing quotes...

Uh yeah, I agree. I won't get into it but *cough* doctors, lawyers, engineers, college professors.....*cough, cough*

Electical and Chem Engineers are great, but I occasionally go out for happy hour with Kristie's co-workers and you'd think that civil engineers cured polio, upheld the Berlin Airlift and have just cured leukemia.

So how many autolands have you been responsible for to 0/0 mins? How many sim sessions has it been where your neck and career was on the line? How many 121 ops have you flown?

)

I've got to agree here. My most intensely focused landings are Cat III's down below 600RVR...it's an autoland...pilots are not required to see anything during the touchdown...then have to acquire some visual reference on the runway centerline and feel your way towards the appropriate taxiway turnoff...then somehow find your way to the gate. The landing is challenging, but...it's what occurs after the landing that is tough. I'm an F/O...so that's the captain's job (to exit the runway)...but I'm always very impressed how they handle the situation professionally, confidently and competently...with a high degree of situational awareness.

The only times I ever see an autoland performed are to maintain autoflight currency in the jet and when the vis is requiring Cat III ops. Nobody ever wants to give up their own manual landing.

Haha, ok...whatever floats your boat.

Awwww, come on....i was willing to give you $140k and you're only willing to give me minimum wage?!!! :D

Braidkid, I don't think pilot602 really gets it when you say it's all relative so I'd squash it. Therefore I would entirely agree with what Doug stated..."What do you expect on an aviation website?"

true true....guess i better stir up some controversy on another forum!!! haha Let me know next time you're in town Sprint.

Is there an engineercareers.com?:)

Doug, maybe Kristie could manage one?

I'll check!

But she's really wants out of engineering so I doubt if she'd be up for it.

Let's think about it in terms of ATC. From what I hear, those guys make some good money. They also have thousands of lives in their hands and what they make is justified by the amount of stress they face and etc. The thing is that management doesn't care about that, what they care about is that they can still get pilots even for very cheap. ATC is government based and everyone is on the same system. (Exception of privatized ATC).

The way I see it, management only does pay cuts as a game to see how low pilots will go. They just keep on pushing it more and more. If you think about it, why would they pay people more if they'll do it for less?
