Vital Info for Veterans seeking GI Bill assistance -

GI Benefits can be accessed once assigned and PRESENT @ your selected facility. As you can read below Sooner1ATC pointed out that GI Benefits cannot be accessed while @ OKC (I apologize for the incorrect title) b/c.. well.. shinanigans.

As quoted from the website below, Benefits can be applied to "OJT" time once you have arrived and begin working/training at your selected facility after your graduation from OKC.

"First, when new employees go to the Academy, they already know their destination facility. They should contact their facility and advise the facility that they would like to access their GI Bill benefit. The facility Certifying Official can fill out the enrollment forms (22-1999 & 22-8864) and submit them electronically to the VA. They then generate the employee's training agreement and fax this to the Academy to obtain the employee's signature. This should complete the enrollment process while they are still at the Academy."

while the NATCA website is vague or non-disclosing as to the nature of GI BILL benefits while AT OKC, it's clear that at the very least your facility will be able to certify you to receive benefits once you are on site.

Vital Info for Veterans seeking GI Bill assistance @ OKC. IT IS DOABLE and has little to do with the pending '09 bill changes.

And possibly a lock on this thread too? just want to keep it simple and informative

Not to rain on your parade but I know for a fact you can't use the training at OKC as a GI Bill training facility. You will have to use the facility you are going to and list them as the training facility when you apply for OJT GI Bill and it starts when you get to your facility. So there is a GI Bill for the veterans though.... Good info!! I bet there are veterans out there that don't know this..... FREE MONEY!!

You are right and wrong. You are correct in that you have to list your actual facility on your application for benefits (not the FAA Academy), but your time at the Academy DOES count toward receiving your benefits. Whether you get your money while you're at the Academy or as a lump sum once you get to your facility is another matter. I quote:

In January 2008, the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) reviewed and certified FAA's on-the-job training program for air traffic control specialist (developmentals). This program certification allows FAA employees who are air traffic control specialist (ATCS) at the developmental stage at the FAA Academy or an FAA facility to be considered by VA for education benefits.

I think the key phrase there is "developmental stage". You don't get that until you leave the Academy and get to your facility.

I will give you even more god news. I talked to the VA instead of taking someone on JC word. Your time at the Academy is treated like being a full time college student. You will get the full GI Bill amount while in OKC. The OJT portion starts when you get to your facility. When you get to OKC you need to get in touch with your HR rep at your facility and they should be able to et the process started. I actually in class at the Academy now, 2 weeks left for basics. Hope this brightens your day.

crewdawg...did they give you backpay for the time you were at the Academy but not getting the benefits? i.e. the time it was taking them to process your paperwork.

My experience with GI Bill is that they will give you backpay based on the dates they receive. I don't see where this situation would be any different. Hopefully Crewdawg knows for sure.

I actually got in contact with my facility and the VA and got everything straightened out also.... I applied for benefits with my facility being the institution of education. I went by my facility today and filled out a couple of forms that they turn in to the VA which included a sheet for each month I will be training in OKC. My facility turns in a sheet to the VA each month and shows how many hours that month I trained based on a 40hr work week. I signed them all and left them at my facility assuming I won't miss a day of class and she is just going to send them in at the end of each month for me to get paid.(of course if I miss a day she will adjust my hours accordingly). She said that she has done a couple of these in the past but they did all the paperwork after they left OKC and just received one large check of back pay and kept receiving benefits until they reached CPC.

Apprenticeship and On-Job Training Training Period
Monthly rate
First six months of training
$990.75
Second six months of training
$726.55
Remaining pursuit of training
$462.35

Sorry I did not get back to you guys sooner, I have been on nights this week. I see that you guys kinda answered your own questions. I just wanted to say that the OJT rate doesn't start until you get to your facility. The academy is treated like going to college full time. I don't know if you guys payed in the extra $600 on top of the $1200. If you did that means an extra $150 per month. I am going to ZKC so I will be at the academy for four months. Nice to be able to soak up full time money for that long. If you guys have any other questions about the academy feel free to contact me.

Ok, I was under the impression I would be getting OJT payments the whole time.... thanks for the info and good luck with the academy :buck:

I filled out a VA Form 22-1990 - Application For Education Benefits online and just got back a letter saying that the "Training Facility is not approved". I did use the OKC academy address when I filled out the form. From reading over this post again with the recent edits (thx) I still am a little confused. A couple of questions:

1) Can you get either full time school benefits or OJT benefits while at OKC?

2) What form do you use to get full time school benefits?

3) Should I fill it out online myself or get my facility HR Rep. to fill it out?
