Stewardess?

Okay, I thought the days of referring to a flight attedant as "stewardess" were long ago. Quote from an article on CNN today by one of their Sr. Producers:

"A second stewardess from American Airline Flight 11, Amy Sweeney, also made a call to airline officials.

At least one flight attendant and one passenger on the other three doomed flights made mid-air calls that have helped investigators, who are now piecing together what happened, according to an independent 9/11 commission. "

Yeah, that term went out along with the main cabin lounges in the back of the 747s!

I would expect CNN's writers to be a little more 'hip' to current job titles!

Some FAs get really irritated when they're called 'stewardesses'. (For the guys, this I can understand) I just blew it off as ignorance. The passengers who say "Hey, Stewardess....." aren't (usually) trying to be sexist or derogatory, they often are unaware of the title change. When people would come up to me and ask "Are you the stewardess?" (never mind that I'm wearing a tired-looking blue suit with stripes on my sleeves and a big pair of wings pinned to my chest.............but anyway.......) I would reply "Yes, I'm the flight attendant, how can I help you?" Kind of politely informing them of our title change, but lacking any attitude and still offering to help.

Personally, I wish I was a stewardess. Stewardesses flew all over the world, had long overnights in fun cities, wore designer uniforms, and never got punched, kicked, sworn at, assulted or otherwise abused on the job. Stewardesses flew in a time where the job still had a little glamour & respect.

Is the term "Stewardess" really that offending? Can someone tell me why and when they switched to "Flight Attendant?"

Most likely the same time as they went from Fireman to Firefighter . . .Garbageman to Sanitation Engineer . . .Waiter or Waitress to Server . . .;)

and by the way, wouldn't a male Stewardess be a . . .Steward?

It's not that the title of Stewardess is 'offending' per se, but it is simply out-dated. The term was changed in the 70's to reflect the changing 'face' of the job. Men were back in the profession (believe it or not, the first 'flight attendants' were actually MEN, serving cold sandwiches on flights in Europe), and the job was no longer just something for a young lady to do until she 'settled down and found herself a man to take care of her'. The rules about stewardesses having to retire at age 35, or when she got married or had a baby had changed. People were now looking at the job of flight attendant as a career, not a short-term job.

HOOTERS AIR ... One of my former Co-pilots is now a B737 Captain for Hooters Air. Each flight carries the required number of flight attendants as well as a couple of real live Hooters Girls hand picked by the owner, my understanding is that they wear thier Hooters uniform during the flight and put on sweat suits while in the terminal.

Yeah, there was an article on them somewhere, and a furloughed FA from US Airways was working for them.

Just imagine the preflight briefing. "In the unlikely event of a water landing, your flight attendant may be used as a flotation device."

Oh, yeah, here is a funny song. Amber, you can smack me later.

She don't wear no pants and she don't wear no tie
Always on the ball, she's always on strike
Struttin' up the aisle, big deal, you get to fly
You ain't nothin' but a waitress in the sky
You ain't nothin' but a waitress in the sky

Paid my fare, don't wanna complain
You get to me, you're always outta champagne
Treat me like a bum, don't wear no tie
'cause you ain't nothin' but a waitress in the sky
You ain't nothin' but a waitress in the sky

And the sign says, "Thank you very much for not smoking"
My own sign says, "I'm sorry, I'm smokin'"
Don't treat me special, don't kiss my ass
Treat me like the way they treat 'em up in first class

Sanitation expert and a maintenance engineer
Garbage man, a janitor and you my dear
A real union flight attendant, my oh my
You ain't nothin' but a waitress in the sky
You ain't nothin' but a waitress in the sky
You ain't nothin' but a waitress in the sky

I never heard of that song until the dude who writes the Ask the Pilot column on Salon mentioned it.

He just came out with a book, by the way. And if you want to support a furloughed pilot, you can pick it up. I've talked to him and he's a good guy.

And the best line ever using the word "stewardess?"

"Oh, stewardess, I speak jive."

Would this be a good time to point out that HootersAir's website says they need F/As at Newark and Baltimore?
There you go Amber - be furloughed no more
