STEEP TURNS

I love instrument steep turns. One of the biggest problems I had at the very beginning of these was chasing "performance" instruments like the VSI. As long as you're setting pitch (via the AI) and power like a VFR steep turn, you're set.

I usually don't like to adjust power or trim for steep turns unless there is an airspeed problem....on instruments the scan focuses around the attitude indicator and altimeter, with occasional glances at the VSI, Airspeed, and turn coordinator for proper rudder input. I usually ignore the heading indicator until I get near the end of the maneuver.

I don't have students worry about airspeed when they are learning the maneuver, but eventually before they can meet PTS, they have to take it into consideration. That induced drag can kill airspeed quickly.

Two words: Cowling screws

[/ QUOTE ]I'll object to those two words. Not really, but I have a general problem with using airplane parts. It definitely helps with doing a maneuver =in that airplane= but I think that students who learn airplane part references sometimes have trouble with transitions. It's roughly the equivalent of "turn base over the K-Mart" which doesn't help much when at an airport with no K-Mart.

So where are the screws on that Eclipse?

(BTW, do you fly out of Air Orlando? I rented there last month and it was the most professional operation of it's type I've seen!)

Good point. The only plane I've ever done steep turns in is a 172, so I haven't figured out a visual reference for other planes. I have a general area to start with, and I'll just work from there with the Seneca.

Yep, that's my flight school. Not too happy with the new "fuel surcharge," but Sallie Mae has helped a bit with that. I flew x/c out of there yesterday and today, and both times I got picked up in the golf cart when I got back. I think I might get spoiled.
