Starting FSI on 9/7

Hey everyone. Just wanted to drop in and say hello since I've offcially made the switch from Pan Am to FSI. Thanks to everyone's help in these forums, I know I made the right decision.

I'm moving the wife and two kids down to Vero the 2nd week of Aug. It's definately a permanent move since my entire family is down there already.

Just some info on me:
**I'm 28 y/o from Philly with ~60TT and ~10 PIC.
**B.S. from Drexel University w/ a major in Information Systems.

Just wanted to say hello and if anyone cares, I will be hosting my own site dedicated to tracking my progress. I'll post when it's ready.

Any others in this class???

Tuffpants, I will be starting the class right before you, on 8/2. I have about the same totals as you do, I will be moving from western NY. I have a B.S. in exercise physiology from Ithaca College. Are you starting with the private audit, or are you going to begin with the commercial?
Is there anyone else starting around the same time?

I'm Starting 7/19! Stand class that is. Uh oh, better start packing.

I started at FSI with about the same totals in Nov. of 2002. I think that you'll be happy with your choice.

Good luck with the move,

Nope. I don't have my private yet, but damn close. I was told that I could fly part161 and attend the regular ground school to finsh. I just need to do all my solo x-countries and practice my manuvers and I should be good. Do you have your PPL?

If I were you, I would see about finishing up my Private before I got down there. Then you can go straight into step 1a which is a couple of flights to see that you are competent enough to move on to step 2 (time building).

I believe, but don't quote me on this, that you would also be eligible to audit (i.e. not pay) the Private ground school. If you choose to finish the rest of the program pt. 141, you will be given a certain amount of credit for the time that you have already flown. I'm pretty sure that the credit is a max of 35 hrs. towards your pt. 141 CIME certificate. There is a point, somewhere around 85-90 hours I believe, where it becomes more financially beneficial for you to do the whole program part 61.

In case you aren't already familiar with the part 61 vs. part 141 minimums, here it is in a nutshell. Part 61 requires 250 total time and Part 141 requires 190 for the commercial certificate. One downside of doing it part 61 is that you have to do all of your checkrides with a designated examiner. That's not to say that FlightSafety's in-house examiners are push overs, but I've heard some negative stories about the DEs in the area, no personal experience though... And, in the unlikely event that you don't pass a checkride

, in part 141 it just turns into another lesson and you don't get a pink slip.

So, to bring this long winded response to a close, I would say that if you're really that close to getting the private certificate, you should knock it out where you are now.

Good luck!
Dave

I would love to but unfortunately, I don't have the cash. I need all the money for the move. I really don't mind having to repeat some stuff. It's all time building in the end anyway so it's not really a huge issue with me.

No gym on campus that I know about but you get to use the Vero beach city gym and I'm pretty sure its free.

That works for me!

Yea I have my private, I'm going to start with the private audit because its been a few months since I have flown. Well good luck with your move and send me a PM when you arrive.

There is a weight lifting machine or two, a bike, and a treadmill. I have also seen a few handweights lying around. The equipment is located in the bungalow with the pool table, T.V., etc.

I didn't know that!

I busted my PPL after completing a part 141 syllabus. I was given a denial of application. It was white, but I didn't actually think they were pink. I though that was what was referred to as a "pink slip". Is that somehting different? It was with a DE though, is what you are talking about only true with in-house examiners?

Yes, that is with self-examining authority... I'm not sure if all pink slips are actually "pink" though. DEs will issue a denial of application which is the so-called pink slip.

Personally, I don't think that a pink slip is a huge deal, but some people get all freaky about it.

Is that the name of the gym? Vero Beach City Gym? I want to see if they have a webstie.

>Does anyone know if there is a gym on campus?

Yep, and pool, tennis courts etc

Good dicision, there's another ex-pan scam student in our CFI class, it was interesting to hear how almost none of their Air conditioning units work even though it's one of their biggest selling points. I'm so glad I came to FSA first time round.

Hi everyone. I'm starting on Sept 7th as well. Could anyone tell me how the on-campus accomodation is allocated? Do you get to choose the kind of accomodation offered? Thanks!

Yes, provided they have vacancies in that type of housing. But, you shouldn't have any problems getting what you want unless enrollments balloon. Just call and ask to speak to Mr. Fowler and he'll set everything up for you.

No A/C, do you believe everything you here????

and that student failded his multi-ground test horribly. that's why he left. oh and there are ex FSI students at PanAM also.

I have heard that most the AC units don't work from Pan Am instructors as well. In fact I even saw the AC unit labled as INOP on one of the Pan Am Seminoles I saw, and that's what? a third of your Seminole fleet? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/rolleyes.gif

Yes you get a choice of single, shared 3 bedroom or shared bedroom 'apartments', there are also single bungalows. Prices are $22, $16 and $14 per night respectively. For more info see the FSA website, I think there's a pdf with room layouts etc. They're all located right on campus, only 100-200yards from the main buildings and a few mins walk from the flightline, very handy.
