Starting a flying club

I want your opinion or advice I should say. I am thinking about starting a flying club at the local community college. I was wondering if anyone has ever started one by themselves. I would have it affilated with Skypark but I think it would it would be a good way to maybe get some college kids flying that never thought they would be able to. I'm gonna see if I can't get like discounted intro flights from the owner of skypark to generate some interest. Any advice on how I should go about this would be great.

Don't have any advice, but am interested in some of the advice you do get. Where I teach we have NO rental aircraft for rec use. Have been thinking about something like that.

I think it would work out. I take a few classes through Kent State working on a advanced degree but I take them at the local community college through their parternship program and alot of people who find out I fly seem very interested in it. One of the professors there is a guy I fly with so we have been throwing the idea back and forth for some time and we decided to try it. He is working on getting the school involved and I am working on getting Skypark involved. We are still in the very early stages mostly just seeing if both sides would be interested right now.

I guess no one here has started a flying club before? As far I have figured out we could just make the flying club part of skypark. Basically it would just be a after hours club. The school would make no money off it. I could just post fliers with info on the boards around school and see how much interest it generates. If we get enough interest we could possibly go to the college and try to get them to get involved but for right now it looks like its just going to be a after hours sort of thing. I still think it might generate some interest. If nothing else I would like to get the college to allow us to run a ground school using one of the classrooms. From what I have been told they used to that along time ago so I want to try and bring that back as starters.

Ok lets try a new approach. Can someone shed some light on the founding and maintaining a flight club of say...oh anywhere between 5 and 20 people?

I like posers idea. Does anyone have any experience in starting a small flight club? What is the best way to get people interested etc? Right now I am thinking of running a ground school that includes a intro flight at the completion of it. I have two ideas for location. Either at the school if they will allow it or at the civil air patrol room at lorain county airport if they will allow it. We have other options but these would be my first two choices. As I said before LCCC used have a private ground school that was held there but it ended over 8 years ago. I am curious as to why it ended and if we can get it going again. If I can just get a ground school organized this year I will be happy. It will be at least a step in the right direction.

I understand you guys are talking about a college club. But I'd also be interested in how you start one of those clubs that you can rent aircraft from.

Money lol. You would have to purchase the airplanes and set them at a price that would allow the club to at least break even. You would basically need 4 or 5 people with deep pockets to purchase planes. I seen one started where we keep our cherokee where there was 4 guys who owned planes of different capablities and they combined their 4 planes together to start club. Orginally it was just those 4 using each other planes but eventually they let new members in that weren't orginal owners for a price. Theres like 7 of them now that own part of the club.
