St. Patrick's Day

Re: St. Patrick\'s Day

I'm definitely Irish, though I've got a bit of Swede and Scot in me.
You know you're Irish when....
As a child you were taught to jig
You know what a shilegagh is
"When you drink whiskey you drink whiskey"
You know what St. Patty's day really is
You hate the damn orangemen

any others...

Re: St. Patrick\'s Day

I can do a fake Irish accent and drink Irish beer. Does that count?

Re: St. Patrick\'s Day

If you can swallow your tongue you've got the Irish accent down

Happy Irish Day to you all. I'm curious to how many Irishmen are in our JC community.

I am proud of my Irish ancestry although i am not a fan of St Patrick. The story goes that "St Patrick drove all the snakes out of Ireland". Prior to the coming of Christianity Ireland was predominantly Pagan. One of the practices of the clan family religious leaders (mostly the men) was a snake tattoo on the forearm to signify their place in society. By 'driving out the snakes' St Patrick fundamentally changed Ireland. I am curious if the whole Protestant versus Catholic tension would even exist had he not pushed for conversion.

That is just my rant. I am glad that there is a day that people can be happy and drink together. Instead i think we should call it Happiness O'Beer Day.

Re: St. Patrick\'s Day

Here's my St. Patricks Day!

Finally got into GSO at 2310 last night.

Wait around 15 mins for the hotel van.

Call the hotel... "Oh, our driver didn't show up today, the airport shuttle will bring you here"

Airport Shuttle: "Aww, it goin' be 35 minutes"

Shuttle shows up.

We can't take no more than 4 of you because I have a small shuttle.

Pack the van ourselves and voila, we can all make it.

Get to the hotel, sign in, and my key doesn't work.

Back downstairs, rekey the card and finally get into my room at 0045.

And keep in mind that we got 'walked' last week to a very subpar hotel because they sold our rooms during the basketball game.

Greensboro Marriott, you suck!

Re: St. Patrick\'s Day

St. Patrick is actually English. He was born in West England, and was brought over to Ireland by pirates at a young age.

Re: St. Patrick\'s Day

i made it to class, but man i needed a nice 2 and a half hour nap this afternoon!! (i didn't make it to my last class)

Re: St. Patrick\'s Day

No Amen from this brotha. I was DD last night so I'm feeling great today, though last night wasn't as fun as it could have been. I guess it's a wash

Re: St. Patrick\'s Day

Part Irish. Live in a predominately Irish community, with over 7,600 irish folk living in this part of Chicago. We have a huge St. Patty's parade each year that receives national coverage (not the downtown one).

A Scot actually.

He is famous as St. Patrick for his efforts as a missionary in Ireland. There is some doubts as to the "pirate" nature of his relatives that "relocated" to Ireland.

He is responsible for the shamrock being the symbol of Ireland. It is green to match the Emerald Isle and the three leaves signify the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost.

Re: St. Patrick\'s Day

He was Welsh.

He was captured by Irish pirates and brought to Ireland to work as a slave. He stayed for about 6 years before he managed to escape. He then returned a few years later and helped to convert Ireland to Christianity after he heard voices telling him to do so.

That's what we have been told happened....

Re: St. Patrick\'s Day

HE was a Chinese Jew. He created Egg Foo Yung, gunpowder and built houses and was subsequently crucified for the whole snake incident. Turns out, the Irish really LIKED snakes. Who knew?
