St. Maarten

Has anybody flown into there? If so, how long did it take you to learn how to land with all of those people, and the runway being so close to the road? I have always wanted to go there. What is it like?

I actually just got back from there last week. I did not fly myself down but the island itself is a lot of fun. Airport beach is pretty amazing....Air France flies an A340 in there daily and Corsair flies a 747 in there. American, Delta, and US Airways all fly 757's to SXM. Everything else is commuter type planes.....Twin Otters, Dash's, Caravan's.....still fun to watch. Watching people get blown into the water when the A340 and 747 run up their engines is pretty funny. You can tell who has been on the island a few days and who is new. The newbies stand directly behind and are promptly desposited into the ocean...along with a mouthful of sand.

You mean US Airways doesn't fly there?

Maybe you could jumpseat or non-rev down there. Or perhaps bid for a new line if USAir does go there.

I would suspect that landing there is not much different from landing anywhere else, as long as you don't worry about all those people watching your landing. Its a runway. On an island. With no mountains in the way. How hard can it be?

I agree with you. BTW UsAirways does fly there. It just looks like you need some experience/practice landing there. Look at the pictures on jetphotos.net
I am amazed by those pictures.

Id Love to go there one day, looks like paradise!
Where exactly is is located in regards to Europe?

That must be pretty awsome to see, how far out do they go into the water, I bet'd be a rush! How much did you pay for accomodations?

Yeah thats what I thought. It looks a little warm to be in Europe. Never been to Europe so I dont know if they have places that look like that.

It's just I think you're confusing the "Netherland" from "Netherland Antilles". Ditto, it's in the Caribbean.

They don't go too far into the actual water...it's more like they're walking down the beach then all of a sudden they're running toward the water because the wind is so strong. Some people thinkt hey're smart and they kneel down...but that just make them roll down the beach towards the water. It's really amazing to see.....There is actually a road that goes between the beach and the runway and there are warning signs on the road...when a jet is taking off all the traffic stops until the plane is gone.

Luckily I only had to pay for 1 night of accomodations...my parents gave me and my wife 1 week of their timeshare for our wedding present. We flew down with miles so we had to get there 1 night early because that's the only flight that was available. So the 1 night we did have to pay for cost us $199 plus the lovely 30% tax St. Maarten charges for hotel stays so it came out to like $240 for the night. It's by no means a cheap place....food is very expensive if you eat out all the time but that's to be expected. Once you get outside the main city areas and touristy areas the island is pretty run down and poor but most of the islands are like that from what I have heard.

Spot on Mate, i was!!!

Thanks

There is a soccer field on shortfinal for 19 at DCA. I bet those kids get a good show too! I saw an MD80 take off on runway 1 with about 500-1000 feet remaining and probably left a few soccer playes deaf!

Don't make that general knowlesge. Those kids will show up to find the field fenced off and "No Tresspassing" signs everywhere...

Sorry, still bitter about Orlando shutting down our super cool viewing spot off the approach end of 18L/18R

Nah, they won't. There's a park right next to DCA and it is so much fun to sometimes just go and watch the planes come in. I really like it when you can see the wake turbulence coming off their wingtips. That is the coolest thing to see.

When did they close that? I used to love watching from there when I lived in Orlando.

They shut that down? Argh!

Kristie and I used to go hang there sometimes when we lives in MCO.
