I know this is a long shot but does anyone happen to have any info on the flying in this beautiful place? I just came back from a 5 day vacation and honestly I was just blown away. This is the first time that I have ever felt that I found a better place than the US. Anyhow, I'll be doing some research myself and posting anything I find as well but if anyone has any info I would greatly appreciate it.

From what I remember, Sri Lankan Airlines hires typed pilots for their Airbuses...that's only what I remember from what I saw on their site a few years ago, though. From what I understand, the place is just recovering from a violent civil war with human rights abuses committed on both sides of the conflict. It might not be the world's safest place to live but best of luck if you find something! :)

I'm in the process of looking up Sri Lankan Airlines to see what I can find. Just learned that they are actually owned by Emirates so that would be pretty decent.

As for the war, I've heard a lot about it since living in Chennai but that has basically blown over now. I was all over the country last week and there's wasn't one time where I felt uneasy or questionable about it. Everyone was extremely friendly and helpful anywhere we went. Also most of the fighting was in the extreme north which is easily avoidable if I was that worried.

I highly recommend everyone to come visit Sri Lanka. The country and scenery is so diverse and 50 kms down the road will give you an entire different environment. I just can't stop talking about it, that's how impressed I was.

Tamil Tigers, only terrorist organization in the world to have an air force, who thought a Seneca was so deadly to someone other than a low time pilot!:D

Sri Lankan has had expat pilots in the past, even all the way back to the Air Lanka L-1011 days. Most were let go in 2002 after the Tamils ( about 13 in bare feet armed with rifles ) managed to over power airport security ( it's an Air Force base ) and shoot up most of the Sri Lankan fleet. Pretty funny story in all honestly. Apparently the Sri Lankan security personnel have about one bullet for their old rifle. Fire once, drop, then run ( better than the Italian army at least :cwm27: ). So they lost about 4-5 aircraft and let go most of their expats. They did hire some back a few years later, but not sure if they are still there.

As for EK owning them, they did technically own about 40% and had a 10 year management contract. That contract is over and not renewed. The disposition of the stock was up in the air last I heard. Peter Hill has gone on to run Oman Air now.

Haven't managed a long layover there yet, but it's on the list of things to do. Good beaches and surf in the south. Nice mountain scenery in the middle. Not very good infrastructure, which is pretty typical for the region.
