Just in....looks like it went down upon takeoff but we're just hearing news about it now. Can't make out the tail number , looks like a tree is covering that area. Flames are out...word is, possibly 2 people...one trapped, one ejected...no survivors :(

1 killed, 1 injured, was on approach to the field.

I'm saddened and frustrated by this event. Sad? Obvious reasons... Frustration: - 2 SR-22's crashed between SDL and DVT in the past year or so, I'm guessing that both of them would have been non-fatal if the chute was deployed. If I bought a Cirrus, I would be reaching for that handle as soon the chips were down. I have no idea if it would have made a difference in either one, but it seems that Cirrus instructors need to get this into the pilot's minds. MMQB rant over.

How long does it take the chute to deploy? Are there altitude requirements for using it?

Obviously it's speculation, but if they were on approach, and certainly short-final, perhaps the chute would've done no good?

Oh believe me, I'm sure they have (gotten that idea in the minds of the pilots). The fact remains...you CAN be too low to deploy the chute. If this was a crash on approach, I'd say that may be the case and the pilot (wisely) chose to fly it to the end.

It sounded as if it was on real short final/go around, so the pilot made the right decision by not pulling the chute more then likely. Below 400 AGL (if memory serves) I'm flying it to the ground. I'm thinking he crapped an engine on the go around.

A recommended cutoff alt. is about 2000ft to deploy the chute. At this alt you have just enough time to descide to pull or not to pull. I personally would def not pull the chute below 2000 unless there really was no other option available
