I will be starting my instrument rating soon and was wondering if you all could tell me which dvd instrument course is better,(Sportys or King). I noticed that sportys is around $50 cheaper than King.

Save your money and just buy a good text book instead, like this one

I did my instrument with the King's. They are pretty lame, but they get the point accross pretty well.

Kings are always good... Never used Sporty's.....

but nothing beats a good ol' red Gleim book. Cheap, yet it gets the job done! It just takes a little more self-discipline than the DVD's.

If you want a book that explains things really well, get the on from Rod Machado. Couple that with the Jep or Gliem Test Guides, and you will get as much out of it as you would from the Kings or Sportys. Not to mention you will save enough for a few hours of IFR flight training time.

Thanks guys for all your input. I used King on my private and was a good tool in passing my written. Thanks also for the info on the books, but Iv never been much of a bookworm and seem to get more out of the dvds.Again,Thanks

I'd say go with the Kings/Cessna. They're great. I even have a set I could sell you. :sarcasm:

doesn't the king one let you do your ground part 141 also? or are we all talking about something different....

The fbo (part 141) where I have trained uses the Cessna/King cd's as their ground school. I believe it really just depends on the school. They were informative, but did get a tad boring at times. I liked them because they allowed me to study at my own pace and whenever I wanted. I did not have the time for a formal ground school meeting 'x' nights a week for however long.

If youre really interested i might have some copies of the king instrument stuff in a box somewhere. I uhh...made some back ups and lost the originals in all the moves i've made.

I'm interested in this as well. I'm on the verge of beginning IR training and looking into possible study options. While I feel it would ease training with visualizations offered in the DVDs ... is it worth $200-$300, esp. if I can in turn give that money to my CFII to help visualize for me, I do have to fly with him anyhow.

For what it's worth, I read on another thread or board ... some felt the Sporty's work better for the checkride, while King's better prepares you for the written. Not sure if anyone else would buy off on that or not ... just what I've heard.

If anyone is interested, I was at the airport this morning (Holland, MI - BIV) and saw a posting for the King Instrument package on video. "Never used, still unwrapped. Pilot who purchased the package passed away shortly after receipt. $286 new, sell for $150 or offer".

If interested let me know and I'll get you a name and phone #.
