Sporty's E6B vs. ASA CX-2 Flight Computer

Rotor2Wing

Unapologetically American
How do they compare? I have (or had) a Sporty's Flight Computer but we just moved and it is MIA and I may have to buy another one. They are both basically the same price but I wanted to get some real opinions on the CX-2.

If you have an iPhone, you can download Sporty's E6b app, I also like PFMA. Much cheaper than a CX2. However you can't use an iPhone for a written exam.

I do have an Iphone but will be using it for a couple more written exams. I'll have to have the FAA approved device.

I am not for sure about the ASA, but I share the common complaint about the Sporty's E6B that it is really easy for the on button to get pushed while it is in your flight bag and will kill the batteries ASAP.

Thats my only complaint about it.

No batteries.

Never had that problem with my paper wheel, which has been going strong for 12 years. The one on my watch works in a pinch too.

I had the sporty's one and I second the complaint about the batteries running down because of a button being pushed. I don't think I ever put in in my bag, pulled it out and had good batteries. I find I like the interface a lot more with the ASA flight computer. Just seems more slick all around. I think the features are pretty much thesame.

I have the Sporty's and I haven't had issues with it turning on if it's kept in it's case. Then again, I only ever use it on writtens...

I've used the Sportys electronic E6B as well as the ASA CX-2 on written exams.

After having the sportys one for years, i lost it, and for the same price- i just decided to get the CX-2 for the next written exam.

The CX-2 seems to have a few more functions, it also has a plastic shell case that slides off around re-attaches (so you wont hit the ON button by accident when its in a bag)

All that said i think they are both good computers, and work great on the written exams.
If i remember correctly, Sportys had a section of the website that you could try the computer online through the webpage to see how it acts and if you would like it. Or if you can see one at a flight school, play with them and see what you think.

Along those lines I guess nobody uses NDBs or files /A or /U anymore either.

As somebody who flies /A everyday, I'll say that it sucks in this day and age. Any pilot who chooses the more analog/old anything because he thinks it makes him more of a man is a poser. I haven't even used a goddamn E6B in 10 years (pre-private). Hell, my watch has an E6B bezel and I've completely forgotten how to use it because I can accomplish all of my major calculations with basic math. I have an older ASA (I think) electronic E6B, but I haven't used that in years because its usefulness to the working pilot is pretty negligible. E6Bs are the domain of student pilots, I reckon. If I really needed one, it would be in my flight bag.

Count me in as someone who hasn't used one since my PPL training.
