Split Duty/Stand-up History

Does anyone know the history behind stand-ups? Have they been around forever? Does mainline do them? How did they get approved in Part 117? Was there ever any talk of making them illegal or changing them?

Side question: When you do a stand-up do you try to get some sleep for a couple hours or do you just stay awake and sleep when you get home?

Northwest used to have them, and they went pretty senior. They aren't bad if the flights aren't long.

I loved them at Pinnacle. 40 minute flight up to Pellston, then a 3 minute drive to the hotel. Something like 8 hours behind the door usually, free breakfast, no security and a 40 minute flight home, and all day to play on the lake. Those were the days...

If you think stand ups are bad, you have no idea how bad schedules can get.

Flying to Europe sounds awesome, until you realize you can do it with a two man crew in the middle of the night on some city pairs.

6 hour flight from LAX to JFK or BOS in the middle of the night? Yup.

A red eye turns down to the islands from New York? Those exist. Depart at midnight, get down to the islands at 0300 or 0400 and turn the plane to come back.

A split duty where you at least get a nap is benign in comparison, and I used to complain about those.

Do you even 135 bro?

Do you even part 91 large cabin bro?

I think people are just beginning to figure out why I complained so much back in the day. I've never done anything at a 121 that comes close to what I used to do. These days I'm just giving thanks for my "crappy" regional...

Yeah. I do several nights per month very similar to the island turns. Only with more legs and single pilot..I'm looking forward to my hopefully soon transition to 121...

They're hit or miss at 9E now. I'm doing some this month (should have been on one tonight, but it WX cancelled) that are 1:30+ block on the CR2, with maybe, at best, 6 hours behind the door. I know for a while the CR9 was doing things like DTW-OKC-DTW on a CDO. No thanks...

Here in Denver we have RDM, PSC, COU all of which are too long. Accompanied by a 25 minute van ride makes the last one even better.

The JFK-YHZ one is brutal. JFK-BWI is one of the best.

We had an awesome PDX BOI for a while that paid 7.5 hours with almost 9 hours in the hotel. Only problem was you couldn't bid them back to back with the buffers in our PBS software.

You got us all primed up... let's hear a few ball buster stories.

I've only ever done two and they were enough to make me hope I never have to do them again. ATL-ORD, blocked around 2:30 if I remember right. Hotel van ran on a schedule and we always got in at just the wrong time to actually make it, and they'd often flat out refuse to come back for us. God help you if they stuck you at the other side of the airport and you had to take the underground train at ATL. All this for 4:15 at the hotel.

There were a couple ORD-PVD and I believe ORD-BDL. Not outside the realm of possibility to block over 3 hours on the way back if the winds sucked. No thanks.

I'm not who you quoted, but here ya go...

Noon pick up for a 3 pm departure. Supposed to fly to Italy, then Ibiza, then back to St. Petersburg, with 8 hours of flying, scheduled to arrive in St. Petersburg at 0100, with a noon departure to Italy the next day. Original boss shows up 4 hours late, and delays in ibiza cause us to arrive in St. Petersburg at 0730. We still departed at noon with the other boss for a 4 hours flight. I slept 12 hours after that.

"Part 91" international large cabin... happened last rotation.
