Well it's especially bad if you have a jumpseater too and the captain chastises you for "trying to get us violated".....but eh, whatcha gonna do...part of the job I guess.
That stuff goes both ways. I heard about a story from another FO (I won't name the airline):
"On a recent trip, ATC told us to expect a GPS XYZ. I told the CA we can't do those, there's an ILS with a 7 knot tailwind so we'll be ok. He accepts the clearance for the GPS approach anyway, gets him FOM out and starts looking through it as we're descending through 6000' on our way to the IAF."
This poor FO then says something like "Capt, I'm 99.9% sure we can't do GPS approaches, do you want me to ask for the ILS?" in a please I beg you listen to me sort of way.
CA gets his FOM out and starts flipping through.
"Look, it says here GPS is an authorized approach procedure".
"What's your date?" "Dec. '05".
"Mine says May '06. The XXX airplanes could do GPS approaches, that's why that's in there. Mine doesn't list GPS as an authorized approach."
"OK, well, we're almost at the final fix so we'll just say we broke out and went visual".
Generally CA's are EXTREMELY sharp but every now and then they will get you violated too. As an FO, I know the CA's help me out WAY more than I help them out, but that's just the way it is. I've been on the line 6 months, these guys have been here 6 years...
