Speaking of minimums....

A poster in another thread brought up minimums being lowered I looked at ATP's website, in the hiring part, and saw some of the minimums for some regionals did not require a degree. Was this always the case? Pilots are getting hired close to the minimums and I always thought don't even think of becoming an airline pilot without a degree or way above minimums. Simply put, I have to ask wassup wit dat?

You don't need a degree to obtain employment with a regional airline, never have. Some major carriers with hire without one as well. Still best to get one though.

OK. Cool, I just thought this was something new. I'll go with the be as competitive as can be philosophy

I may be totally wrong, but after looking at a bunch of the airlines requirements the only one I noticed that required a degree was FedEx. This was way back when all the airlines were hiring and had their requirments online.

It is always a good idea to have a degree in something when applying to an airline.

Say you have 1100 TT with a degree, and your buddy has 2100 TT without a degree. You both apply to the same airline. You are more likely to be chosen over your buddy because of the degree you posess. But then again, I could be wrong.

I dont know about THAT, but maybe if you both had 1100 TT. Just remember, there will always be the guy with 2101 TT AND a degree.... best to be as competitive as possible.

Okay, folks. Let me ask you a question.

You're competing with lots of people for a single slot. The company says it prefers college degrees.

So, what that means is that they're looking to dump resumes. So if you don't have something they prefer you have, then what are the odds that your resume will end up in the trash can?

Very high.

But there's going to be a pilot shortage soon, and a degree won't matter. If fact, in a few years they'll be so desperate, they'll come looking for you. Though the majors will still prefer literacy.

The pilot shortage caused by the conversion of the ERAU flight program to a Part 142 system. Ya know...that one.
