Southwest To Lower Minimums?

Heard from a friend that Southwest is currently looking to lower their hiring minimums from 1000TPIC to 500TPIC. Anybody here heard the same or know anything different?

When I talked to SWA at OBAP last year, I talked to someone in HR about that requirement. The woman I talked to said it will remain for now, but "I wouldn't be surprised if things change sooner than later."

Hearsay, of course.

There is no tangible correlation between success as a new hire and 1000 TPIC.
I would imagine it's a preference to have decision time, someone with experience actually calling the shots. I bet that as a captain you don't want the guy in the right seat to just go along with whatever idea you have and say "sounds good" because well, what if it's a terrible idea?(not saying you have terrible ideas plz don't ban). But how many times have you and your FO been faced with a decision and you say "What about..." and they say "Ehhh, how about we do this..." And you say, "Yeah, I like that better, let's do that". The guy in the left seat has ultimate say, but we're a team.

So, from my perspective I understand the reason they want it, but I don't see it as a make a break item and I absolutely agree with you. But hell, what do I know, I've got no decision time while burning jet A So, with that I don't really know how big of an item that is to them, or you. :p

I've kind of seen both.

Some of the higher time guys in the right seat take the attitude of "I don't care, you're the captain"/"Spent the last X years making decisions and I'm just cashing the check now" which then we have to have a "corrective chat" about.

High TPIC guys run the gamut from "Awesome" all the way down to "You do understand that 'I don't know, he's the captain' doesn't jive at an administrative hearing".

Don't sell yourself short. As an FO you are still a pillar in the successive outcome of any given flight.

I appreciate it, but that last sentence was a joke about a 0 TPIC pilot not mattering much. I'm sure most here have been through thick and thin, much more than I have but I have been lucky and had some awesome captains that treated me like an integral part of the team. I do remember on my first leg of OE, to be honest I'm not sure what the issue was but I think we were deviating around weather. I am, for all practical purposes, still in the crew room a few states over at this point and my CA talks out his plan and asks me how I feel. I very uselessly said "Sounds good" He grinned and said, "Yeah, you're probably still back in the gate right now, I understand this is all real new but just try to formulate an opinion and realize that you are part of the team too, your captains will appreciate it and some times need your expertise"

It was a great way to start the trip. I thought he was using the term expertise very loosely, but down the line I guess it can come to fruition.

I would love to see this happen, but I'm not sure they will drop it. Also if they do, why 500? Why not just get rid of it all together? Keep regional FOs out?

A filter.
1000 TPIC is a better filter than type rated, 0 time in type, but wants to work at SW? I figured they would drop the the TPIC and keep the type, as opposed to what they did.

After all, I would think an FO that got the type* and 0 TPIC vs a CA with 500-1000 TPIC and no type, would be a better "candidate" when it comes to who wants to work there.

*I don't approve of that requirement, but it used to be "the way the game is played."

EDIT: I know you control the hiring at Southwest and have 100% control of what gets looked at and what doesn't. Hence why I'm asking ;).

Welp, it depends.

Remember, it's not a numbers game.

I get that. So why keep the 1000 TPIC filter vs the type filter? Or maybe the computer still has both? No idea. Just a general why, not asking you, personally, to solve the world's problems here.

At a presentation over at WIA this year, a recruiter said that they are keeping the TPIC because they didnt want a new captains first ever PIC experience to happen at the controls of a SWA 737. Which made sense to me.

My recruiter friend's company doesn't have that.

Why SWA has it? I don't know. They're still getting applicants they like who have it and we're all looking for specific people compatible with our individual corporate cultures.

Are they maybe doing this, to make their airline look shiner. Because they're not getting as many candidates, as the majors. Due to the fact that you'll be an FO there (apparently) for your whole career?
