Southwest Hiring

Kind of interesting - the job was posted last month, then taken down, and now the same job is reposted. I guess they didn't get enough people that they were looking for the first time or something.

I noticed it said something about international dispatching experience preferred....I wonder if they are going to be going to Canada or Mexico soon? I believe they are going to be flying to HNL soon.

They are starting routes from DAL to the Caribbean, Central, and South America in the next year or so. The last time I was on a jumpseat, the pilots were talking about that and the new RNP program. Along with the ETOPS program you mentioned. Plus Air Tran has a largish international operation out of BWI (a lot of it use to belong to USA3000).

It does seem odd that they would re-post this. I would be astonished if they didn't have any qualified applicants the first go-'round. Oddly, my application still shows "open" in their system from the first posting.

I am sure many of us know who have been in the business forever know SWA is a great company to work for....with that said, I know it is very hard to get on with them. I have applied with them for Operations, Customer Service and Flight Attendant......and I was already working for Delta and SkyWest.

I am surprised they don't have someone internal that is qualified.

I think they must have some really strict ideal requirement that nobody applying has met yet. Or perhaps internal people are mad it's not being filled internally. Who knows....

That is a red flag to me when an airline is hiring management positions from the outside when there are dispatchers already there that meet the job requirements, one of which quit UPS not long ago. It is also a red flag when the required experience is shockingly low for such a position and comparable to that of our assistant interviewees.

Perhaps, just like UPS, taking a management job is actually a demotion, and therefore none of the dispatchers are willing to take a reduction in pay and benefits.

At my current airline chief dispatchers are still part of the union and are paid regular dispatch scale plus a bonus for working a supervisory position. I would think SWA would have a similar setup, but I am not sure. To me it sounds like SW wants to have people in charge with international experience, which none of the current group has since they haven't started operations yet - I could wrong about that as well, of course. I have a couple friends who work in dispatch there so I suppose I should ask them but as I won't be going there myself, it's kind of a moot point.

I know of at least half a dozen dispatchers with international experience and at least 5 years industry experience that have become available in the last few weeks, so I'd be surprised if there was a lack of qualified candidates. So far as I can tell it's a re-listing of the original posting, but I have no insight beyond that.

And, so far as I know, chief dispatchers at SWA are not covered in the CBA. As such the external candidate would be in the unusual position of supervising a dispatch department that he/she has never and will not be able to dispatch for.

If the TA I saw is reflective at all of the agreement currently in place, I can certainly understand why a line dispatcher might not want to take the chief job, but again, I also have no idea what they are proposing as compensation for the chief job either.

So really this post had no real substantive contribution to the discussion, but it was a good way to eat up 3 minutes of my life, so there!

From a friend at SWA:

"They are having trouble retaining Chiefs...we have had several come back to the floor due to the money in the contract...which they didn't match to the chiefs....so they figure if they get someone from the outside not on the seniority list...they have them."
