SouthernJets 757 Gossip

I would have thunk it as folks are seeing how it is overrated as a city.

Wellllllll, I spent an inordinate amount of time in downtown MSP when I was on the 330 and I gotta say the people and the hospitality (and, well, the bars) were surprisingly underrated.

Great Japanese fare at "Origami", @JEP is BMOC because one of the servers is another pilot. Had one of the best Mexican meals (Yes, as a native Californian and Arizona resident) of my life at, crap, I can't even remember what it was called but I think it was "Masa" with Mike Lewis and family, great town to bar hop in.

Great airport. Not so much in love with the caterers because I'm always having to pull embarrassing-to-admit crap like "Well actually, the fourth stripe means you're going to cater the aircraft properly my friend". Awesome chief pilot office, I'll have to tell you the Thanksgiving story one day, just an all around pleasant experience.

But arctic. WOO!

Shanghai Airlines has the last 757-200 built. I remember talking about how things were going with the students that I instructed while CFI'ing who were trainees for various Chinese companies including Shanghai Airlines, on a few different trips I made to China where I visited them, and was surprised to learn that they apparently only had four 757s total.

I'm surprised it took this long for them to decide it wasn't worth having such a small number of an aircraft type. I would guess anyone who could get their hands on even just a small number of fairly new 757-200s would be improving their fleet for the better, even if it was to cancel out four older ones being parked.

I wasn't aware they had 757s at all! I knew of the 737s. I need to make a trip out there and visit my former students. In sure they're captains by now.

I've heard Delta is very happy with the 737-900ER performance. Increased margins from lower fuel costs and pax love the modern cabin. Pilots and FAs don't love the plane but I doubt that bothers revenue management and network planning.

With the abundance of long runways at most major hubs domestically, not a lot of city pairs require 757 performance.

If LGA authorities decide to allow transcon flights as rumored, expect a 757 party up there!

Watch your mouth!

Oh and why aren't transcons allowed out of LGA?

This. United says every 739 that replaces a 752 improves the bottom line by $2M.

@Derg my guess would be the older 752s have some end-of-life MX issues that are accelerating their demise. Since the 739s can't come fast enough, you scrap these 752s for parts (the only real valuable parts will be engine parts like LLPs) and pick up newer models on the used market for cheap to keep the network capacity flat.

Did someone say "Idyllwild?"

Hmmm... Nope. Don't think so.

That's dumb. But I bet it was created so as not to take traffic away from JFK.

A lot of dumb things make a lot of sense to a lot of people, it just may be that the regulation has outlived its useful shelf life.

I don't know.

After dealing with a lot of folks from that area and listening to what they talk about and what is out there in the rest of this beautiful country, I think the cold is altering their thoughts.

I will agree to disagree!

Will you all stop talking about how great MSP is?

All I want to do is drive a 75 around and live in St. Paul, and I can't do that if people keep getting hired at SJI ahead of me and bidding MSP.

Seggy is right, it is horrible here.

Nine feet of snow and below zero half of the year, mosquitoes the size of chickens the other half. Forget the food and the orchestra and the museums and the colleges and universities; Ice fishing is the closest thing we have to "culture" around here. ICE FISHING!

Stay away, stay far far away. Matter of fact, stay away from SouthernJets too. Horrid, horrid place.

I hear...they make you wear...a hat!

If I upgraye-d-d at this airline, it'll probably be in MSP. I've already decided I'm going to go there and move there. And I have a lot of those overnights next month too.

I don't agree to disagree. I WILL VANQUISH MY ENEMIES UNTIL THEY AGREE WITH ME! Cough! :)

Like I really don't "get" Texas. But a lot of people do, which is cool. And I'll let them run around in circles like an overly excited Pekingese puppy but, at the end of the day, it's just "meh". People want to hate on Arizona, that's cool. It's nothing personal and I fully understand the rancor they may hold, but it doesn't amount to a hill of beans to me.

I guess I'm just getting old and largely indifferent. And it's awesome. :)
