South Aero Inc. - KABQ

N422NM

Home on the weekends
Anyone know anything about South Aero Inc., 135 Op. based out of KABQ ? I know their address and all that but am looking for any info on runs, pay, QOL, etc...

I know they flew UPS (maybe DHL ?) stuff into KFMN in 402's when I was there but I never got to talk to one of the pilots.

Anyone ?

I talked to a few of their pilots when I was at FMN (BTW when were you there?). It's a time building job, although the pay is a bit better than the average, at around $32k+ depending on the run.

The runs from ABQ are typical of a DHL/UPS run - ie you fly out of ABQ in the morning around 6:30 - 7:00 AM and go to an outstation and sit until 5:00 PM, when you fly back to ABQ either direct or via another stop (ie one run from FMN was FMN-GUP-ABQ). You load and unload your freight.

Almost ALL VFR, as one would expect in New Mexico. I'm not sure how they fit in with Aero Charter and Transport.

Aero Charter & Transport in KABQ is a different company actually...the president of which is actually a distant cousin of mine (5th or 6th removed...) that I met one time about 20 years ago...

I'm looking to get out of PHX and back to ABQ (lived there in the late 90's/early 00's) Last time I lived in FMN was August 2002.

Parents live in Farmington/Aztec and wouldn't mind having a run that I could leave home in the AM, sit in an outstation and play golf or sleep during the day and fly back in the evening...

Yeah, I knew they were seperate companies but I guess what I was trying to get across (unsucessfully :)) is that I'm not sure how the two companies fit together - they operate similar aircraft into the same airports for the same companies so I'm not sure which is more stable/growing/etc. I know aero charter and transport was purchasing some ex-quest diagnostics C-310's and using them on the FMN runs.

I'm pretty sure with both you'd be "based" in ABQ at night, but spend the day in FMN if you got that run. The only 135 company that I know of that was based in FMN was San Juan Medical Centers' PC-12.

I work for aerocharter...if youre looking to get back to ABQ I believe they're currently hiring there...we do have some of the old quest 310's.

As for the two companies they don't fit together they're competitors. I think South hauls for different companies though.

As for the airplanes its just a good airplane in the mt's.

Guess I should have added if you have any questions about AeroCharter just ask.

As far as I'm concerned its a great company, really laid back, no pressure, moneys good etc. etc.

The two companies are pretty much neck and neck with pay. I fly out of ADS but the runs pay different depending on flight time etc.

Base pay runs have around 4-6 hours of duty time with 3.5 or so flight and pay 95 a day or about 25k a year.
Per Diem runs are longer 10+ but pay 95+ 30 per diem which is really like makin around 140 or so a day becuase per diem is non-taxable. comes out to around 35

We have some runs that are premium and pay 160 a day, these are if you fly more than 5 hours in a day and the duty days can vary. around 40k or so.

We've been short on pilots lately and I've been flying double+ per diem runs. My duty day has been around 12 hours and 6 hours of flying and I make around 240 a day.

Most of the runs are out in the morning and back in the evening with few all night runs which is nice. We also end up gettin all the bank holidays off because the banks are closed. You get vacation and healthcare after a year.

We fly all twin cessnas 310Q and R's and 402 B and C models. Our training is short and most of our pilots seem to be around 1500+ when they get hired. We do have a 1 year contract thats more of a gentlemans agreement than a written contract.

As for South Aero I'm unsure but the two companies are pretty similiar from what I've heard in regards to flying, pay, etc.

Hey Texaspilot,

Are you guys still keeping the multi minimums at 200hrs? I'll have 1200 soon, but I'll probably only have between 75 and 100 hours multi, it that, by then. And how easy is it to get the ADS base?

Thanks,
Kelvin

HOLY CRAP! This is my calling, I wish I was done with school and had the mins! What are the mins anyways? How big is the company, do you think they will be in business for a few years? Is it tough to get based in ABQ?

I'm referring to both South Aero Inc., and Aero Charter & Transport. Thanks for the info!

Mins. for the most part are part 135 IFR minimums...possibly a little more depending on the market and pilots needed (South Aero I think is 1500TT/150ME)

They've been in ABQ a LONG time...so I don't see them going anywhere but you never know. Both companies have been flying sin at least 1997 when I was at UNM.

I'll let you know more as I find out about them.

Both operations have around 12-15 planes from what I've been able to find in the registry.

Texaspilot - How does your sit time work at the outstation ? You just hand around the crewroom/coffeshop until it's time to load up and go back 'home' ?

Cool thanks man. So you're a Lobo then! Even though I never went to UNM, we watched the bball team when I was younger, i'll always be a Lobo at heart. :)

I think we have around 25 aircraft and 40 or so pilots but I'm not sure, i know we have more runs than planes and pilots and so we contract out many runs. I know we have around 7 or 8 in ADS and ABQ has more than us plus reno and PHX.

1500/100 seems to be average for what the new people are getting on with. I was hired with 1475 and 150 the one other guy in my class was 2500 with a lear type but just lookin for a laid back job that paid decent. The guy that taught the class come on with 3000 and lear/king air time again just lookin for a place to hang out for a while. It does depend on how bad we need pilots.

As far as the off time its pretty much yours to do whatever with. You have to be within an hour of the airplane but thats not hard to do. I have a 24 hour fitness membership so I usually go to the gym, take a nap, and catch up on the history channel, and most importantly try and meet the netjets pilots:) when I have long days. I've heard of a few guys actually getting a part time job at arestaurant and just working the lunch shift and some guys just bring thier golf clubs along and go hit the links.

As for the bases you get hired into one. I was actually hired into reno then offered san antonio then the day before class asked if I wanted to stick around dallas so it actually worked out pretty good for me.

I know right now we are really hurtin for a pilot in houston and its a super sweet run. Like 5 hours duty and base plus per diem.

Interesting. As I said, the Pres. is a distant cousin of mine. I didn't realize that you guys had a PHX base of operations. I might contact them and see about that...then could possibly move into a position in ABQ as it's open perhaps.

Thanks fo the info!
