Sore throat

So I have had a sore throat for almost a week now. Since the weather has begun to turn hot I have been sleeping with the AC on and no shirt.

I do have five blankets on my bed so I thought it might not matter. I originally thought that maybe I got the sore throat from sleeping shirtless with the AC on at night.

But I know other people that have been experiencing the same problems (sore throat). Mine original started with the sniffles and then drainage, then a dry painful sore throat. I think that drainage went from my nose to my throat (is that possible) and caused the throat irritation, fortunately no headache issues.

I have started to cough up thick green plem. My glands are all swollen under my jaw and neck and tender/sore to the touch.

Also on my right size at the jaw bone I have a pea sized lump that can be felt when touched. It isn't tender or sore, but it can temporarily become so if I play with it. (I should stop playing with it right?)

So yea, what should I do for the sore throat and swollen glands and what is the hard lump at the base of my jaw?

As always, thanks in advance.

The lump is just a swollen lymph node. These filter infection and the swelling shows theya re doing their job. This is probably viral and you will get better in 10 days or so.

Cool, thanks! Besides the dry painful sore throat I feel normal! So help me out for a bit more please.

Virus's are airborne. But I'm debating this with a friend who said I got sick because I slept shirtless with the AC on. Originally I thought this too as my mother used to always claim stuff like that.

I'm sure everyone has heard it before.

"It's cold outside put somes shoes/hat/sweater/jacket/gloves (et al) on, or you'll catch a cold."

But again viruses being airborne you can't catch them simply because the outside or in my case inside temp is cold, right?

You are right Max. Viruses are airborne or are transmitted by direct contact. Sleeping shirtless (or pantless :)) does not cause a cold.

Not to step on the doc, but I would monitor your throat. I had a sore throat that was going on 2 weeks. Finally I said enough was enough and went to see my doctor. Originally thought it was allergy or virus related, but doc wrote a prescription for an anti biotic just in case it didn't improve. Well two night later it got much worse, to the point where it woke me up at night. I went and got my prescription filled (amoxicillin) and my throat felt 100% better two days later. Must have been some sort of bacterial infection in my tonsil.

If you're up for answering questions, I'll ask one if you don't mind.

I have an earache on the right side, headache on the right side, right side of jaw hurts (toothache basically), and underneath my jaw is a little bit tender.

You think I could get this for grinding my teeth at night? Or should I go by the doc to get checked out?

Thanks

you could get it from grinding your teeth.. maybe your grinding more on the right side than on the left.

i just got back from the dentist and he said they can tell if you are grinding or not depending on tooth wear...might be a good time to give them a call and go in for consultation if your having that many problems on your right side only.

Ugggghhh, it's back...after being gone maybe a week and a half. Again, no headache, chills or anything, doubt it is strep. But my throat or at least an area around it is killing me.

Hurts to swallow, and keep dry hacking, or sometimes coughing up green infected mucus, and losing my voice.

What's up doc, and are there any home remedies?

Again, probably allergies. We have seen a lot of this inthe past week. Tree (especially olive trees), grass and week pollens are all moderately high this week. Olive trees are a real problem in Phoenix.

I still recommend non-sedating antihistamines and nasal steroid sprays. Occasionally, we will give someone an injection of a corticosteroid like Kenalog to block the allergic reaction.

Allergies have really been annoying me the last few weeks too. I got a prescription from my doctor for Flonase. Not sure exactly how long it takes before it really starts to work, but I've been on it for a few days and so far its started to help with congestion. The right side of my nose is the problem side, hopefully the Flonase will kick in, but so far I've been off of Afrin for 2 days and breathing much better. Flonase does make the throat a bit sore though.

Max, maybe you should see your doc about it. When I had sore throat issues a few weeks ago, my doctor wanted me to try singulair, as its a type of allergy medicine that treats the other side of allergies.
