Some FSDO/TSA Advice if possible

Ain't nobody got time for that
Hello, everyone

Ok so I'll get to it: I started my private training when I was still only a Permanent Resident (Green Card) so naturally I had to jump through all the TSA hoops and whatnot.

Fast forward, now I'm a private pilot blablabla and I recently got my citizenship (we'll just say sometime in 2010).

I assumed the FSDO/FAA/TSA would automatically know this so I didn't fill out a TSA form for my instrument rating and whatnot and went ahead passed the checkride and all and now I'm scared the instrument rating will be invalidated because I never contacted the FSDO to show them my citizenship papers.

Should I call the local FSDO and setup an appointment and change that status or am I worrying over nothing?

I want to do this ASAP because I want to start working on my commercial in about 2-3 weeks after I pass my written

Thanks guys, it's so liberating to finally be a citizen and not have to worry about all the hoops foreigners get to jump through despite having lived here legally for 12 years.

I am by no means an expert, but either your flight school should have a photocopy of a document that proves your citizenship, or you should have an endorsement in your logbook from your instructor saying you are eligible for flight training.

If you're a member of the AOPA legal plan give them a call and they should be able to help you out. Even if you are just an AOPA member you get a free 30 min consult.

They have all my info and whatnot, I started at a new flight school since my private so the only way they've dealt with me is as a citizen. The FSDO however never got any sort of updates from me as far as that goes so I don't know

That's a good idea. I will call them later today.

Would it be bad for me to call the FSDO and ask, sort of incriminating myself? I'm worried that if I don't say anything everything will go just fine but if I say something it will raise red flags.

Damned if you do damned if you don't

There really isn't anything to incriminate you. You are a US Citizen.

There is no requirement for you to inform the FSDO, and no chance of you losing anything. The requirement is for flight schools. They have to have copies of your documents, or the endorsement, or comply with the TSA program for non-citizens. There's nothing for you to worry about!

The FSDO honestly doesn't care what citizenship you are, so long as you report it correctly on your 8710. There is a clear demarcation between the TSA and the FAA.

Ok cool thanks guys, when my instrument comes in I'll update y'all to make sure they didn't shove my papers around.

I think it's been 3 weeks, what's the time now with IACRA for getting the card? My private took me 3 weeks I think

You definitely have to notify the FSDO of your change in citizenship that is if you do not check the box of 8710 for US citizen when applying for your next certificate. . If you do check the box for US citizen on your next 8710 without reporting change in citizenship, your 8710 will be kicked back and you will have to present proof of US citizen. Your instrument rating will not be invalid nor will you be penalize for not reporting a change in citizen.

What country you come from that uses "whatnot" so often? :)

Congratulations on your citizenship!
I never really thought how much I use that word... I'm from Brazil but I've lived here for 13 years now, and I'm only 23 so while my life has been about half and half, mentally I'm more American than Brazilian but culturally I'm more on the other side of the fence. I definitely don't think in Portuguese and have a much harder time finding words to use in it whereas English is just a breeze to me.

I plan on moving back at some point to kind of learn more about my culture and what it's like living in Brazil as an adult. That's in the future though!

Thanks, that's pretty much what happened. Private = not citizen instrument = citizen so I am expecting it to come back anyday now

My private took about a month to come back.

Cool. I hope it actually shows up in my mailbox and not a letter from the FSDO requesting my proof of citizenship.. :( That would be sad but I guess it doesn't really matter I'm not in a rush or anything my temp lasts far more than this should take to sort out (I hope)

The longest amount of time it took for me to get my plastic when using IACRA was 2 months. Typically it's about a month. The quickest was about a week and a half to 2 weeks.

I kind of want to just forget about it and wait for it to come in, but at the same time I'm gonna take my comm written in about 3 weeks or so and I really really don't want to find out in 2 weeks that I need to setup an appointment with the FSDO and all that jazz wasting my time.

Congrats! When I finally got US citizenship, I made an appointment and went to my local FSDO with my US passport. The guy who helped me was very nice. Changing citizenship was a breeze. He took my license and gave me a temporary one. I had to wait for a 1-2 months to get my license in the mail. I really would not worry about your license getting invalidated. Secondly, just make an appointment with the FSDO and have them change it for you.

ok cool. so in that 1-2 months that they are changing over my license, am I able to say get a new license? I ask because i plan on getting my comm in 4-6 weeks

I'll give them a call and schedule today

so update:

This is exactly what happened. They kicked the instrument back (checkride over 2 months ago) and the examiner keeps telling me he still doesn't have it (FSDO is telling me he's giving me crap because they sent it back to him over a month ago).

I have been to the FSDO and did an 8710 to change citizenship, they took my private and gave me a temp. Now, they gave me a temp without an instrument rating (since they hadn't officially received my instrument from iacra) and my temp instrument. My private temp now is dated 3/25, my instrument temp is dated 2/5 and I just got my comm yesterday dated 4/10.

I am seriously thinking I have to wait for the instrument to get back to the examiner, then he will resubmit, then the comm will get kicked back because it has instrument in the application, so I have to wait another 2-3 months for that.

And to top it off I'm getting my multi sometime in the next two weeks, so that's another kickback :(

I will have to wait for my seaplane at jack browns, I don't want another kickback!!!!!!!!!!
