So about XCs

My instructor always encouraged using flight following ... and being so, one of the few problems I first encountered on cross-country flying was picking out my call sign when being called by Center or Approach.
This may sound trivial but what really helped me was to, a few flights before the XC, use the same plane and get used to call sign. Also just running through some radio calls for practice using the plane of choice. I know it sounds ridiculous but eventually your only identification problem will be flying another plane with your "favorite" in the air at the same time :nana2:

Just keep everything in your safety comfort zone, if it starts getting out of the comfort zone box make decisions to put it back in. Also, remeber 121.5 and 7500....you will never be away form a voice:)

7700 emergency
7600 lost comms
7500 hijacked
1200 VFR
0000 military intercept
Anything else is assigned by ATC when you are on a flight plan or flight following.

Hmmm speaking of military intercept, is that one you only use when you have an F-16 for an unwanted wingman and one on your six?

Can you get intercepted in something like a 152? I mean slow down to min controllable airspeed which I think is 39kts?? and watch the fighters trying to intercept you drop out of the sky while trying to slow down as well. That is until they get have you on missle lock from a few miles out and blow you out of the sky. :sarcasm:

i know f18s can get down to like 60 knots... but aoa is like 60 degrees!

in other news, i broke the sound barrier in the 172 today. i was at FL480 and got it up to 1.2M

I was burning alot of fuel at that speed, so i had to descend to FL250 to meet up with a KC10.

The boom operator was able to get me on the first try. not a bad day. flew from GKY LAX GKY JFK GKY. not bad for a days work.

for kristie: :sarcasm::sarcasm::):sarcasm::sarcasm::):):):sarcasm:

frog, I see you had another productive day at work. I thought I heard someone trying to reach center but they said something about them being too high.
