Snow does step 5...an FSA diary

Greetings, sorry it's been a while since my last post but it's been a busy week, so here it is!

Day 13 - Thursday, May 27th

Well my instructor and I decided to leave the Frascas to last, which wasn't such a bad thing because I hadn't practiced the multi engine manovers much and it was a good review on procedures and checklists, many of which I hadn't given a good review since step 3 (multi private)

Day 14 - Friday, May 28th

Well had another frasca today, much of the same stuff as yesterday, VMC demo, SE landings and emergencies, power on and off stalls etc, I had reviewed the checklists more last night so I was getting the hang of them again. Also worthy to note my last lesson for the whole CIME program, assuming my checkrides go well of course! But considering I had completed my Step 3 to comerical standards it shouldn't be a problem.

Day 15 - Saturday, May 29th

Ah long weekend, all the more time to study with, been reading through the comerical oral guide, has some interesting questions in there, also been going through some emergency checklists which I was a little rusty on, I generally get all the items correctly but not always in the right order, so I've been working on that.

Day 16 - Sunday, May 30th

Slept in and then more study.

Day 17 - Monday , May 31st

Public holiday, although the flightline was technically open there wasn't much flying going on and so more study...

Day 18 - Tuesday, June 1st

Well to my suprise I was scheduled on for my mock today, which is a good thing because it looks like I should have my comerical done before the end of the week which means I can start CFI ground school next Monday.

Well the oral was about two hours and we covered just about everything from systems, to weather, to privileges of a comerical pilot. Did well on that and then it was time to go to the plane, flight was a bit under two hours and all the regular multi engine manovers were carried out, only criticism I got was that I did annonce my position in the training area often enough. I did this mainly because I didn't hear or see any other traffic in the training area but that doesn't mean they arn't out there, anyhow I'll make more of an effort for my checkride.

Day 19 - Wednesday, June 2nd - Final Stage Check!

Well got my final checkride today! Wow they're on the ball now, they must have caught up with their checkride list because this is the first time I've had virtually no wait from last lesson to mock, to final checkride. I am actually glad it is the next day because I think I had studied just about all I could and the mock was a good practice and I felt I was as ready as I was going to get.

Well the oral was shorter than on the mock, but my experence has been that the mock is always harder than the actual checkride anyhow, I answered all the questions correctly and showed a more in depth knowledge than was required in the begining so I wasn't proded too much on the later questions and we finished them quickly.

Then it was out to the aircraft, the plane had a bald tire and after consulting the check pilot we decided to have maintance change it for us, first time I've had to do this, but it was quick and they had started on it before I had finished pre-flighting the aircraft and we were delayed less than 5 mins overall. The flight went well although my wind correction was a little off and so we had drifted off course a bit and I was so busy crunching numbers I hadn't noticed. Realisticly what you do on the checkride and what you do in real life are a little different, on a real flight I probably would have either filed IFR or flown the victor airways using VORs or GPS and would have completed the flight perfectly fine, but oh well. That and my steep turns weren't real great and aparently my VMC demo was too rushed, but everything else was good. I got 90 somthing on the oral but those few mistakes on the flight kept my score out of the 90s and I got 80 somthing, nothing a little more practice could have acomplished but oh well. Actually I think I had done quite well considering it had been like 3 months since I had done most of those manovers in the aircraft.

Anyhow I got my comerical ticket and my 3rd stripe and now I'll be on to comerical single add-on, CFI and hopefully be able to get a job working here as a CFI. As that would be my ultimate goal for building experence to get to work for an airline because A. I truely belive that FlightSafety offers the best civil training in the world and it would be a honor to work here and B. because I think I would enjoy teaching and they say you only truly know somthing when you can teach it to someone else, as well as having career oriented students, good opertunity for multi time and good contacts and career opportunities down the track.

Hope you enjoyed my posts and checkout my earlier posts from Private onwards if you haven't done so already. Also feel free to post your comments/questions here.
