Small World

I was sitting at lunch the other day with a friend of mine who operates a large helicopter charter/flight school. We were talking about one of his ex helicopters, N98KR, a Bell Longranger. I mentioned I had seen it about a year ago locally, which surprised him, because the helicopter is based up near the Canadian boarder now.

The next day I walk out onto the ramp to go flying and N98KR is just shutting down. I walk up and greet the pilot and his wife and tell him how ironic it is to see the helicopter here the day after talking about it. What are the chances he would have a trip to a small airport in Delaware the day after I was talking about that helicopter? I told him about my past with the helicopter (my dad and I flew it down the Hudson shortly after 9-11 while the buildings were still smoldering) and we BS'd for a while.

As I am laying in bed tonight I look over at a frame on my wall that has five pictures of me sitting in N98KR before the NYC trip. My phone rings and I am told a green helicopter just crashed locally. I knew it was N98KR. Normally when I get these calls it has a bad ending, especially with helicopters. After a few more minutes I get the conformation that it was KR.

Another five or ten minutes have go by and I get a text saying only minor injuries. This has all transpired in the past 30 minutes. The weather is perfect, so it will be interesting to see what the cause is. I am just glad to hear they are ok.

Ditto on the good news. Neat story, and the world is a small place. I need to remind myself of that when I start getting an onery feelin' rising up.

Definitely one of the most important non-aviation things that this industry has taught me is just how small the world can be. Glad to hear this story has a relatively happy ending!

Strange how you can hear the tail number of an aircraft you've flown and instantly remember the color, quirks and layout of the instrument panel. So far two airplanes I have time in have been involved in fatal accidents. For the last one, I knew the tail number before they even showed the picture of it on TV.
