Anyone worked with it much? A friend of mine had an interesting failure of the Slick Start box. I'd like to know if anyone else has encountered problems with them before.
Sort of.... It's all solid state. Pretty neato and works really well at giving a good boost during start. However, in this particular failure scenario it grounded out the left mag so when the pilot did his mag check and switched to the left mag, the engine quit. Then it blew an exhaust stack when he switched the key back on.heard of it, know of one airplane with it but I don't know much about it, other than it seems to be the slick version of the "shower of sparks"
You know, I don't know. It doesn't seem to be much different than starting with impulse couplings, but then I haven't started this same model of engine with impulse couplings either. The nice thing about it is no repetitive impulse coupling inspections and no moving parts. It just plugs in and works. Except when it doesn't....How well does it work really? one 206 I work on has it and the rest don't and none of them are that hard to start.
You should ask ML about Slick Starts, specifically one that didn't quite make it to SGY.
At least I think that's the story. It's been a while since we talked about it.
Yeah, I haven't heard from him, but second hand... an impulse coupling that killed a friend of his?Vice versa, pre slick start iirc.

The 22 uses impulse couplings?I was stranded last week in one of our 22's cause of impulse couplings!
