SkyWest RJ class

Hey gang,

I'm in transition class with G_Dawg here in SLC for the RJ-200/700/900. So far class has been two days long and it is going smoothly. Tonight was fun because I met up with SkyWChris and grabbed G_Dawg and we had dinner. Chris has two more trips with SKYW before he heads to Alaska training so it was good to see him. It is great to see the JC crew in and around all these great arenas of aviation.

I thought I would toss out the offer to share the experience of class with anyone. If you have any questions about what it is like let me know. I know some of the others have basically blogged their way through class and those were great. But let me know if you'd there is anything you'd like answered or are curious about and we can see if we can give you some answer. It is fun to try to give back. Afterall, it was four short years ago this week that I logged my first flight hour. That was after reading Jet Careers for about six months to gain advice. I know I would have loved to ask me questions back then. Of course I probably wouldn't have known what to ask.

Cool! Any idea which routes the -900 will be flying? Look's like SkyWest is hiring like crazy, I've read somewhere that they are running a new-hire class every two weeks until May 2007!

The 900's are probably flying places that mainline used to fly.

(Note this is note a rip AT ALL on Chuck, G or John K. They're all great guys, but Skywest IS going to be flying the 900's on routes that USED to be mainline)

Yea...how many of those 900's are they getting over there at SKYW? Hopefully not too many...

How long does the transitioning take? Is is shorter than when you just get hired or no?
Thanks a bunc before hand. Maybe I'll be in your shoes 3-4 years from now and I can pass it on to others.

yup, i know...at no additional pay either...it's sad...

In the same tone...

Maybe once you hit the line you can share what it's like to fly a 90 seat jet for 50 seat pay.

I know that's a cheap shot and it's not meant to be personal, I have good friends at SKYW who got me all fired up on the subject.

True, the hiring is continuing at break-neck pace. It looks like a new class every three weeks through the middle of 07'. That's about 50-70 people per class.

I know the 900 is going go to SLC-MEM and SLC-Toronto. I don't know any other routes.

Most of the guys in our class are just out of their one-year seat lock. So it only takes 366 days really. Upgrades are going really quick too. I've been asked to upgrade a bunch but when I tell them I only have 1900TT (company policy is 2500TT min) I get the double take. And at this point, I have a lot to learn before I sit in the left seat. I would be bringing the Captain standard down if I could accept the upgrade. ;)

Where are you going to be based?

How do they work the training, do you do your initial in the 200 and then go to the 700 and 900 after 100 hours in the 200? Will you strictly fly one or will you be flying each one. For example, my neighbor is a CA in ORD and he only flies the 700. How is the 700 and 900 configured as far as seats are concerned? Do you do CBT or is a lecture based systems class?

The 900 is supposed to be configured for 70 seats, with the additional room being used to bring first class service to the Delta Connection side of the jet operation.

Please correct me if I'm wrong but I believe United Express already has first class service on the jet.

First class service on the Bro is row 9 and a flask!

You went to the darkside? You left "SkyWest Express?" How much time do they really devote in ground to teaching you how to read the U.S.A Today? How hard, really, are those three step flows? :D:D

I kid, I kid ... I'll probabbly be right behind you in a bout a year ...

You can bid to fly certain equipment or you can bid any other variable your devious little mind can conceive. In other words the fact your friend only flys the 700 is by his choice and is allowed by his senority. Not company policy.

The bidding software OO uses allows for multiple preferences to be built into your bid.

Congratulations!! I'm glad that you are moving your way up. Let me know when your free, I'm just across the ramp.
