Skywest interview....

...I guess they are now inviting folks for interviews as I just got my invite. Any extra gouge out there? I've had invites now from PSA, American Eagle, Republic and Express Jet but unfortunately, I just don't have time to interview with them all being active duty.

I got an invite as well but now we got news of our new owner. I don't know if I want to leave just yet! I also don't know if I want to take a pay cut to fly CRJs.

Damn you industry!

Congrats guys. I thought it was weird when people said we weren't hiring, last I knew (which isn't much) was that they just cancelled the Bro classes. But regardless, welcome and good luck. The gouges at will fly for food are and have been accurate for years, so look those up. Really, though, the interviewers don't want you do sound like that you've gotten all your answers from there. Be yourself, know your stuff, and you'll do fine.

I'm still depressed that after 20 years in the Navy the best that can be done for Bunk is a regional. Seriously, can't we all get together and get him at a real airline or FedEx or UPS? An airline that actually is the same as the paint job and has their own customers? Come on, we need to make this happen for Bunk.

If you're going to go to a regional, Skywest is one of 2 worth going to that I can think of. There are gouges out there, but from my experience, the best plan is to go in there with the ability to fly the Frasca (or whatever sim they use), have enough tech knowledge for your current airplane and general knowledge you would take to any interview. Also, their CRM exercise is interesting. But primarily, they seem to focus on personality.

I think that a guy like you will have enough experience that they'll focus more on your personality and ability to make a favorable impression.

That said, there is a guy in Salt Lake that does interview prep for a reasonable fee. You will go in EXTREMELY prepared. Message me if you need details.

The talent level of our new hires in the past few years have been pretty good. Most of the guys I talk to have come over from another regional. That says a lot about our company. There are a few things you will enjoy at Skywest, 1. Job security 2. Job Security 3. Job Security

At first I was pretty insulted by your post, then I remembered you have no experience with 121 and I quickly got over it. By the way, UPS still has people furloughed...

Your heart is in the right place, but the fact is there are A LOT of experienced people having to do whatever it takes right now. I was certainly not a fresh faced CFI when I applied to SkyWest several years ago, having already worked in several segments of aviation as well as having my ATP, a jet type, and tubine PIC. When I went to class, I found there were many people in my class with those same qualifications and more. With only one or two exceptions, everybody either had prior 121 or some kind of turbine experience. Keep in mind this was for the Brasilia!

Incidentally, one of the guys (a SkyWest captain) that helped me get the interview flew with my Uncle in the Air Force.

My experience has been the same. Lots of guys from other regionals, corporate gigs, ecetera.

If Bunk comes here with his military experience, the 121 time he gets while waiting for that United/FedEx/Southwest/Delta phone call, certainly won't hurt his future chances at the big leagues.

My interview back in the summer didn't have a sim, it seemed they only gave that to low time people. The CRM portion is still there but it seemed they were mostly looking for someone who wanted to be there and had a good attitude. I have enjoyed my time here so far and I had some time under my belt from 9E and although the people were great there this company is night and day different.

There was a recently-retired F-18 driver at my Atlas interview a few days back. I'm not sure what his overall background was before that, but I'm positive that he didn't have any 121 time, and 98% sure he never flew heavies. Got your stuff in there?

Skywest did this last year right? Stop running classes from like Jan-March and everyone was like "wtf" - then full steam ahead thru the summer.

Here's the thing Waco, nobody else is hiring right now, except maybe United soon. I did the United job fair, seemingly went well, talked to two folks, including the head of recruiting and former Navy pilot. If the legacies were hiring, I assume I might get a call. Though US Airways sent me the thanks but no thanks email. If I want to stay current and try for FEDEX or UPS down the road, this is one of the ways. I'm still not sure either as going from making $125K to $25K is not appealing...though I have $45k or so in retirement. I've applied to the T-45 simulator job, makes around $80-90k a year part-time but then I have to stay current. Is what it is, the state of the industry, economy, etc.

I interview with Express Jet on the 28th of this month and Skywest said March for the interview. I assume if I were hired, it would be a pilot pool. PSA has already placed me in a pilot pool. The competition is tough no doubt, for example, going up against guys with 8000 hours, all of 121 experience (guy I met at United's job fair). My buddy and fellow Navy T-45C instructor pilot has already been placed in a pool at Skywest. He has 4800 hours, primarily flying the S-3B Viking, T-45C Goshawk and the C-12A Huron. I have 3000 hours, primarily in the C-2A, T-45C and T-34C. Point is, tough competition all around, from both the military and civilian. Though I've been contacted and asked to interview by all 5 regionals I've applied to and only one responded to him but my guess is he is more qualified than me.

BTW, maybe you guys know but I don't have my ATP. I've got my ATP written, CFI, CFII and MEI. Is that good enough?

No disrespect to Bunk as I sincerely appreciate his service, but the fact the you're depressed that he may HAVE to go to a regional actually depresses me. I'm merely a student pilot in my 20's but if I've learned one thing from this group it is that this career is a journey and timing is everything.

I understand your intentions were good I guess the post just doesn't read well. I will never have 20 years of military flying experience, but I would actually be proud to fly for Skywest, and at least one other regional I can think of.

Looking back at the last 20 or 25 years of airline hiring, it is highly unusual that a current, actively flying military pilot with that much time and experience would not get hired directly by a major.

There are lots of reasons why military pilots go the regionals when they retire -- certainly there are a number that do --but it has not been the norm by any stretch so long as I've been cognizant of it.

Looking back over the last 20 years its also very unusual to find guys with over 1000 TPIC stuck at commuters if they wanted to move on. But then again the definition of ”commuter” back then wasn't New York to Houston.

That's actually relatively true over the last 5 years where not much hiring has been going on at all at the majors. It hasn't been the case necessarily for most of the military guys I know who have gone directly to majors during that time.
