Skywest internship

I found out last week that I got the internship at Skywest. I'll be at LAX working for the Chief Pilot. Has anyone done an airline internship or know someone who has? What was it like?

I didn't do one but heard about...
8 to 5 days - Push papers, help out with any projects they’re running help the admin. assistant, go on tours including (possibly) training center in SLC and sims, learn a bunch about ops, get a copy of the SOP, meet people.
Jon is a very nice guy, you will love him.
Some people go to SGU - work in scheduling, hiring (that one would be sweet for you!), dispatch, etc, but most go to the bases and work for chief pilots.
Have fun!

at the interview they asked where I'd perfer to do an internsip. The choices were Denver, St. George, SLC, and LAX. I live in Sacramento, so I wanted LAX or SLC. It would be great to work in hiring, but commuting from Sac to St George would be rough. I don't know anyone that lives in St George either.

I have yet to try for one so I cant really help here

I've gotta get on that soon though as my college time is coming to a close! lol

Anyways, just wanted to say best of luck! I'm from LAX area. Flew around there quite a bit and used to enjoy the airport till 9-11. Regardless, you'll have a great time and I hope it works out well for ya!

We had an intern sit through our 757 ground school class. She was going to be involved with updating the Power Point presentations. She was always running around doing grunt work for the training dept.

I'd say it's a great chance for you to get an in at Skywest.

I had one at ExpressJet this past fall. It was a blast. True, alot of grunt work like filing, typing, etc... but it is a great opportunity. Congrats.

The average intern job is filled with work that needs to be done but they don't want to pay someone to do it. They would rather pay you in groundschool, experience in the company, guaranteed interviews, jumpseat privies (if you are lucky), and stuff like that. I wouldn't say my internship was hard, but it was definatly inlightening on airline life. I was able to take a groundschool and the Embraer ERJ-145, great experience.

Good luck and enjoy!

The above people summed it up quite nicely. I don't know what you'll do in LAX but in SLC the majority of our time was spent helping out around the office. We were also given a couple projects to work on.

You'll probably take some "field trips" to SLC and Mecca. Best advice is to take advantage of all the opportunities they give you. Sit in on ground schools, check out some sim sessions, jumpseat when they'll let you, hook up with a mechanic while he's working the line...

Internships shouldn't be about the company getting free labor (emphasis on shouldn't), it's about you learning the airline industry and the company.

And don't eat at the Route66 cafe or whatever it's called, by the SkyWest gates. Overpriced and undertasted
