Skywest internship

I wasn't sure where to post this so my apologies in advance.

I just got a call to interview for the flight operations internship. I guess my questions are: is it worth it and will it benefit me down the road?

I will have one class left to take if I do this before I can graduate.

Well with things are going right now, I would say no. Living in SLC and not getting paid is not really worth it IMHO

I'd say in this day in age an unpaid internship with a regional airline is not practical. I didn't want to use the word "useless", because I think internships are a good way to get some practical experience. I'd say the No. 1 reason students are doing internships at regionals is because of the reduced flight time requirements and a foot in the door. In fact, a lot of airlines have hired new pilots that have completed an internship program. However, if your sole reason is to do the internship because of the reduced flight times or the jumpseat/travel privileges, I don't think it will be worth doing an internship at the regionals, especially the way the economy is right now, and the possibility of a new FAA rule requiring more flight times to get on with the airlines.

I certainly recommend to anyone doing an internship, but the best reason to do an internship is to gain practical career experience before college graduation. This will help you either confirm a career choice or make a decision to choose a different one. You can make an informed decision about whether you are truly interested in a particular career path (airlines for example) — a good thing to know before you graduate!

There are paid internships with airlines and other aviation companies. I would certainly recommend going to the interview with SkyWest and get some interview experience and then make an informed decision if it is the right internship for you or not.

Good Luck.

Try to get hired by SkyWest as a rampie or a gate agent. View it as a long term paid internship.

Well it's not about the money, my family is willing to support me with what I need. So that's not the issue.

I just want to make sure that this would help me in some way. Whether it be by getting my name out there, making my resume stronger, or something else.

I really want solid and smart advice and that's why I'm putting this topic on JC and not some other board.

I guess I don't see how doing this could really hurt me and if the new laws don't get passed for 121 then maybe it could help me with hiring qualifications? My main worry is that if I don't do this, then I would be passing up a good opportunity to better myself in some way towards my future.

Thanks guys

What is your major?

-Funny Sidestory- I applied to two of Alaska Airlines paid internships and was rejected because I'm not majoring in aviation....it's like they're encouraging you to not give yourself an out. Haha

I don't know, I was fortunate enough to get a paid 3 semester co-op for a major airline in their technical operations side. It was a great experience (even though I was not offered a position given the economy). That said, I would have NOT done it for free. Why? There are many companies who are still paying their interns. Have you applied to Delta, Southwest, American and Continental? They have good intern programs...

I applied to American, Alaska, and SkyWest. SkyWest has been the only one to follow-up and it is only like 20 hours a week that they want.

Oh man, is it that bad? I'm still checking the site daily for more openings!

I just realized that I dont work well in a structured environment where I take orders. That's all. I guess running my own business is making more sense EVERY day!

Take it for what it is worth, there would certainly be pros and cons to an unpaid internship. All that aside I know many pilots here who did the internship thing. (I was not one of them.) It does not give you an automatic pilot slot, but it can help set you apart in getting an interview.

I like the idea of working on the ramp at an outstation...As long as you don't mind some physical work. I think it would give you just a good view (if not better) than an intern would get, plus you'd be paid. I'm sure you'd get the "special attention" that any intern would get as far as hiring goes.
