Skywest Ground School Week 1!

They've actually already stopped doing static. They basically just walk us through it for the first time and give us a CD-ROM to practice and follow. They give us the poster of the cockpit to practice in our room then when also have that static display you see in the picture. So pretty much, no more static instructor.

However, with regards to the interview..........they just added something to it that is pretty significant. We're trying to see what it is but their not spilling the beans. All we know is that they're taking people into the static for the jet and throwing a scenario at them. That's all I can decifer at this point. And for a small nominal fee I can........hehehe.....j/k.

BTW- thanks to WillFly4Food for hosting the pictures.

Kristie- I'll take you up on that offer when I get more pics this week.

Thanks

Ordered uniforms, which we had to pay for. With two sets of pants, a belt, 4 shirts, a tie, a sport coat, and a leather jacket it came to around $700 bucks. The leather jacket was optional but I had to have it. That was $367 bucks! Way cool.

Then the Jepps were ordered which came to about $125. All of this was mandatory.

Are you kidding? You have to buy your Jepps? And they do not cover any of the cost of the uniform either? (Leather jacket aside of course.) Jeez... Do they make you pay for your hotel too?

The Jepps thing was a shocker for me too. Even cheap ole'Skyway didn't have us buy Jepps.

look for a guy named Royce Nix... he was my instructor at ATP and should be there now as well. You guys will most definitely have an awesome time together!

We have to buy the initial set and then they will pay fo the continued service.

They paid for the hotel. The place is awesome. It has a kitchen with silverware, plates, puts pans, toaster, free laundry, study room, free copy machine, shuttle any time to any where you wanna go, real cheap food, I think we get a huge discount because skywest gives all their employees rooms here. Thats a lot of business for the hotel. I think they have like 100 rooms, and last week when it was busy 95 of them were for Skywest pilots!

The other 5 were probably guys coming for the interview! HA!

That could be a 14 CFR violation. 121 and 135 require that proper navigation materials be supplied by the company to the pilots.

That surprises me that Skywest would do something like that. Has it always been that way?

Technically they provide them, you just have to buy them. I suppose in an industry where you have low time, freshly certified commercial pilots willing to fly for next to nothing they can probably get away with that kind of activity.

Not sure, but I know they used to pay for training until we had concessions Jan 2003.

Are they gonna leave the static mock up in place? They may not have to instruct it, but it would be a nice tool to have. That way instead of pretending along with the CD-ROM, you and a sim partner could do hands-on button pushing and switch flipping.

I just found out why so many pilots from california( /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif) love skywest................I'm looking at the bids for next month at the San Diego Domicile for EMB FO's has 36 lines available, 19 FO's available, and 18 of the 20 days your flying your back home in San Diego on the overnights! Thats awesome if you wanna be home every night. I'm from SNA and theres like 8 or 9 overnights there for the month of the 18-20 days your flying. COOOOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

So you can bid for local trips, 2 day trips, 3 day 4 day and 5 day trips. By that I mean after two days your home. BUT your doing 2 two day trips in essence. So your still flying 4 days a week. But not always.

Works very well if you own a business or have something else going on the side.

I've got 2 hours to kill, we just finished our INDOC test. Woohoo! This feels weird.....having time off /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/bandit.gif......whats time off? Heheh. Systems here we come. I guess they're gonna put away the garden hose and pull out the fire hose now. Yikes! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/insane.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/insane.gif

Hey thanks a lot for the updates, Im really enjoying hearing about everything including the day to day events. It is giving me some more motivation to keep on going and getting to my goal. Also the pictures are great, you should maybe try to talk to doug about how to make a page similar to his and bog's. Anyways congrats and good luck!

I had to scratch my head and think back about paying for the Jepps. I seem to remember me paying for them as well 5 years ago...

Wow great photos Omar, By the way I started going back to AFI and they told me EV was hired at MESA?? or was he with you in skywest? Congratulations and good luck. Oh and by the way how long were you a ramper for skywest?

/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif I remember talking to Ev right after we got emailed saying that we didn't get selected to the jet b/c we had waited a while in ground school. I did remember him saying he was looking around. So I guess in less than a month after that phone call he was interviewed and hired and put in ground school. WOW! So he must of just missed the skywest phone call to come to training within a week or two. Talk about dumb luck. However, he may have wanted to go to mesa instead, BUT.....I won't go there.

By the way, systems is kicking our ASSES*

I've got like 5 fire hoses pointed at me alone!
