SkyWest Airlines - October 2024 Thread

In the weeks leading up to class the training department will send out a list of names and contact info of everyone (with their permission) to help people buddy up with each other to get a place. One bedroom apartments are pricy as heck but a two bedroom usually isn’t much more. So the roommate option is usually the way to go. I had three other roommates at the time that I worked there. All of them OO employees lol.
That's extremely nice that they look out for their employees in that way rare indeed.

It’s probably become a necessity due to how rents have gone up there. I know that back in the early 2000s it wasn’t hard to afford a one bedroom apartment on SGU on what they paid…my friend there had one…but today that apparently is no longer the case.

This. The market blew up in the late 10's and going into Covid. It's become the Florida of the west for West Coasters wanting to retire somewhere with decent weather and lots of golf. Before each class starts they also send an email out to the floor asking if anyone has a spare room they're looking to rent. They got a pay bump in starting pay a year or two ago but (without saying anything negative bc it really is a great place to get your career started) you're still going to need a roommate. Once able, go be a trainer or system controller for the extra override, it definitely softens the blow.

Does anyone know what to expect for the interview?
When I interviewed with Skywest, there were two sections of the interview: the HR part and the technical part. I recommend reviewing the material you learned in dispatch school. Be able to read a Jeppesen chart and understand what a HAT is for example. Be able to read weather products such as METARs, and TAFs and determine if an alternate is required at an arrival time based on the weather products.

I wish good luck on the interview. You got this!

Let me know if you have any other questions.

Good morning was wondering from the individuals that have interviewed what are they looking for(asking) in the interview process?

Another random off topic question, do ya'll recommend signing a lease to an apartment before the start of the initial training class? Asking for advice.

I am trying to find places relatively cheap and close to Skywest, but some landlords are looking for tenants who can move in ASAP starting in December 1st.

I like planning ahead way ahead of time and would like a place beforehand so that I can settle in without stressing too much about it while also working this new job.

Have you physically looked at the apartment? Not over the internet, but you came to St. George and looked? We had a dispatcher try to do it over the internet and got taken for about $2000 for a non-existent apartment. Be careful out here.

Ask those who started jobs right during Covid and signed leases in states they weren’t already in. Not a wise decision.

On an unrelated note, is there anyone here that work in the St. George area that is looking for a roommate, know someone that is, or any housing groups I can look into? I tried posting into the "Rooms for Rent St. George" Facebook group, but every time I post there, my posting just disappears.
I'll be with you in the January class! Bill told me they are going to get us all in contact with each other and a list of people with available rooms I believe!

I’ve told another person who will be in the class in January, but ask Erin for the current airport code list. That something you can study now. Will see you all on the floor in a couple of months.

If this is your first Dispatch job:

1. Put your big stuff in storage.u
2. Take only what you need...as if you're going to college.
3. Rent a furnished room.

If you're good at dispatching and do the right things, check off all the boxes, and decide that this job is for you long term: you can always move your big stuff in a year.

If it is not for you, you don't jive with the personalities at Salt Lake City South, or decide that Dispatching isn't for you, you have not made a $5000 to $7500 investment in moving across the country.

I cannot stress this enough: Dispatch IS NOT for everyone. You won't know until the end of your first year if you have what it takes to move elsewhere.
THIS! I did a few months a GoJet pre COVID. I'd retired from STEM, so I wasn't starting out. I was looking to scratch the aviation itch I've had all my life, so I attended DX school after retirement. To make a long story short, DX wasn't for me. Luckily for me, my brother lived in the STL area at the time (Brentwood), so I stayed with him. All I brought with me was some clothes and a few books. I kept my house and the rest of my things back in PA. When my time at G6 ended, I simply packed my clothes in my car, and headed back home. I retired again, and have remained so ever since. But yeah, this is SOLID ADVICE right here!

All my Shhhhtuff went into storage and sat there for the two years that I worked at SkyWest, had I been there any longer (like about 1/4-1/2 of my hiring group still is) I probably would have bit the bullet and just paid for the U-haul to move everything out there. The way things have slown down, idk if I’d want to go any longer than a year without all my normal belongings. Not to mention the fact that storage expenses add up.

Get a room with fellow SkyWesties. Then as people come and go you can switch them out as needed.

I only moved down there with what I could fit in my two door car. Which wasn’t much. Deseret is the largest thrift store in town and they usually have a decent selection.. Between that and Walmart I furnished a room for less than $500. If you are bringing a pet, know that your selection for where you can live is essentially limited to larger Corporate Owned apartment complexes. SG is notoriously not pet friendly at all.

Washington (north of SG) is blowing up and it’s a straight shot down I-15 to get to the OCC. Even in heavier traffic it really only took 15 minutes at most for my commute. I have friends that live/ lived in Ivins, which is a really nice area. But their commute sucks compared to others since it’s the opposite side of town.

If I had to do it again, I’d honestly pick all the new development housing going up on the state line. It puts you closer to SGU and that whole area is pretty nice. But pricey. So idk.
