SkyWest Airlines - October 2024 Thread

Started in the September training class. Still going through it, but they do an excellent job here, I have loved every minute. Management is very organized. Moved to St.George from Tennessee, so worth it! They typically look for 10-15 people. Good luck to those applying!

I bet moving to St. George was a big move since it is cross country. I'll be moving there from North Carolina come close to January.

What moving companies do you recommend when moving to a place for your first dispatch gig? Anyone can chime in.

Did you go to Mtsu by chance?

Get a U Haul if you can fit it all.
If this is your first Dispatch job:

1. Put your big stuff in storage.
2. Take only what you need...as if you're going to college.
3. Rent a furnished room.

If you're good at dispatching and do the right things, check off all the boxes, and decide that this job is for you long term: you can always move your big stuff in a year.

If it is not for you, you don't jive with the personalities at Salt Lake City South, or decide that Dispatching isn't for you, you have not made a $5000 to $7500 investment in moving across the country.

I cannot stress this enough: Dispatch IS NOT for everyone. You won't know until the end of your first year if you have what it takes to move elsewhere.

Speaking as a former Mormon Air Force cadet myself, I highly recommend the “throw all your sh-t in storage and buy secondhand / rent a room” mantra as (unfortunately) the pay does not reflect the high cost of living in SGU. This was also what I did while I was there.

Sure, you could commute from Cedar City or Mesquite for cheaper rent but both drives suck in their own way.

If you have a spouse/ partner/ etc. that has a transferable skill that lands them a job quickly, then this won’t apply as much to you. But if you’re a single person with no kids, this is the way to do it. I’d personally reconsider keeping your stuff in storage forever though. If this was during the hiring boom I’d say it’s fine but people are finding themselves at regionals a bit longer than initially anticipated so I’d personally bite the bullet and move my stuff if I had to do it again in todays hiring climate. Or you’ll wind up like me and not remember what all you even have in storage when it comes time to dig it all out.

Then a year down the road if you don’t like the gig then that’s that. Nothing ventured, nothing gained.

On an unrelated note, is there anyone here that work in the St. George area that is looking for a roommate, know someone that is, or any housing groups I can look into? I tried posting into the "Rooms for Rent St. George" Facebook group, but every time I post there, my posting just disappears.

I know I am, but only for 6 months. Completely furnished and the utilities are paid for, only 10 minutes from HQ. The training manager will have a list of rooms for rent when you start class. Are they still offering a hotel room during ground school?

In the weeks leading up to class the training department will send out a list of names and contact info of everyone (with their permission) to help people buddy up with each other to get a place. One bedroom apartments are pricy as heck but a two bedroom usually isn’t much more. So the roommate option is usually the way to go. I had three other roommates at the time that I worked there. All of them OO employees lol.
