SiU

I recently read that SiU and the aviation department will be taking a huge hit with funding.

Any truth to that?

To current SiU students- How do you like it there at Siu/Carbondale?

Where did you read that information?

I graduated from SIU in 2009, on the maintenance side of the airport. It's a cool place to live. Seems like the partying has picked up since I left. I know that's an important factor when choosing a school.

Last time I was back was 2003, the last year I did the career fair for Boeing.

Ruiz took over the Av Management program this year. I'm sure Kaps is still around unless he died. Flight always had turnover but that was expected.

They built a great new facility several years ago, been meaning to fly down and check it out.

Planes were always in good shape when I was there. Scheduling was a pain, don't expect to complete on time just flying during your scheduled class time, more so in the fall semester. Dispatch would make it Dual only if there was a forecasted cloud over Nebraska. Instructors were a mixed bag, but again expected since they are drawing on the student base to fill most of those slots. I pushed when I got a bad one and eventually they gave me another one for that class, but it was over half complete by then.

Were there many internships partnered with the university?

United, American and Delta internships were the big ones on the flight side when I was there. They are well tied in with Priester Aviation as well and usually have a couple internships.

Quite a few on the Av Mgmt as well.

I ended up in the McDonnell-Douglas Co-Op program, which was three paid semesters. I could only finish 2 as I was graduating early, but got a job offer that was good until graduation. I did 15 years at MDC / Boeing before leaving for GE aviation.

Overall I liked it. Great faculty and programs and I had time in Flight, MX and Mgmt to experience each of them. I know a few still in MX and Mgmt.

SIU is a big campus that is spread out. When building a schedule look at the buildings you will be in, not so easy to have back to back classes if they are in buildings far apart. Bike helps (well sucks some in the winter, but not much snow), but a car can be a pain in the ass. Flight side (including MX) is quite a drive from main campus, so take that into account as well.

They used to have rules about cars for freshman that were age based, but there were exceptions for stuff like the flight program as you absolutely needed one. I was older then so they didn't apply.

I only spent one semester in the dorms, and that was in the over 21 dorms (Co-ed) so I don't know much about the high rises.

Off campus housing was fairly easy to find. I think I was paying $117 a month for my split of a 5 bedroom house with 3 others.

Nightlife? Well they were kind of famous for their Halloween incidents. The Strip had most of the bars concentrated in one area, but there were some others fairly close to campus.
