Sitting Sideways (FE's)

Just curious. Do flight engineers log SIC time or is there some other time that they log? Do they have a SIC rating in the plane? Do they do a normal checkride from the right seat or is the checkride done from the FE seat?
 
FE time is logged separately from any pilot time...one having nothing to do with the other. Use a dedicated logbook for it. Many FEs don't/didn't/haven't held a pilot certificate. FEs don't get any pilot rating in the airplane for being a FE. Ratings go on a FE ticket as reciprocating/turboprop/turbojet powered only.

Checkrides are as a FE...from that seat as that's the crew position being checked.

Got a FE job in the works ?

A professional FE will know more about the aircraft, it's systems and their operations than any pilot.

A professional FE is, in my opinion, a must have in any 3-person airplane, especially if the airline uses alot of contract maintenance at the stations.

SIC Type only came out about four years ago. Prior to that only the captain was rated. For example, I was an FO in the 737 and E145 yet, I never had any kind of rating for them.
 
When I worked at Evergreen, they required their FEs to have an A&P certificate. They also got paid more than the FOs. I was looking at doing the FE route a couple of years ago, but it is a dieing job. I think Evergreen ended up furloughing a few FEs when the DreamLifters came online. I believe Polar also let go a few FEs with getting rid of the Classics.

Also, isn't the whole SIC Type an ICAO thing about flying international?
 
The SIC thing is about the FAA getting inline with ICAO all over the board.

The Polar deal is a bit more complicated, as the FEs are on the same seniority list as the pilots, and being way senior, can't be furloughed. So there is a big boondoggle.
