sioux?

It's a damn shame. A name and heritage that the school and it's occupants cheered for with pride and spirit. It is an even bigger shame and tragedy that the narrow minded view and politics of a few can destroy a long tradition.

With such disdain for the Sioux name, pride and recognition I am sure all Indian studies and scholarships will be discontinued. Good for the gander is good for the goose.
 
Interesting, I always said if they change it I am transferring; guess thats just another reason for me to be leaving :insane:

So they did change it/are in the process of changing it? What a shame... I guess I better buy up all the Fighting Sioux crap I can get my hands on before the brand goes away.
 
Why is it a shame? This name has been deeply offensive to many Sioux (Dakota, Lakota, and Nakota) people for generations. It promotes stereotyping and reduces a people's heritage to a symbol or mascot. What if it was the Fighting Blacks or the Fighting Germans with a black or German person's head as the logo? Also, why would there even be a struggle to change the name if it were totally innocuous?

Before you say it - I am against "Fighting Irish" and "Washington Redskins" for the same reasons.

Oh ok, so since 2 out of the 3 tribes voted to keep it and the third tribe, Standing Rock, was in the process of voting on it, you think that they are all offended by it. Lets face it, the State Board of Higher Education, made up of 8 people, decided for everybody. Another prime example of the minority deciding for the majority. There is going to be a sharp decrease in alumni donations. A lot of angry people out there right now.

North Dakota and South Dakota need to change state names then. Lakota ND needs to change it's town name.

The Sioux name and logo have NEVER been offensive to anyone in the Sioux nation. The name and logo were never used as an oppressive tool or inside joke against the Sioux nation. It was chosen to honor, respect and thank the Sioux nation.

The NCAA thought UND would be an easy target to strongarm into changing the mascot so they could then go after "bigger" schools. UND didn't bend to their will and a few people who wanted to make a name for themselves jumped on the bandwagon and finished this whole debacle.

A name and a logo don't promote stereotypes or racism. Lack of self respect and "victim" mentallity do. The Sioux name and logo was a rallying point for the school and the sports teams.

You are free to your opinion and if you don't like the Sioux name and logo, don't attend the school or the sporting events, but making the school, current students and Alumni give up their tradition because YOU think it is offensive is ridiculous.
 
It all comes down to money, and its a damn shame.

Im going to love getting phone calls about donating money to the university after I graduate in may.

"Sorry, I graduated a Fighting Sioux, not a flickertail (or whatever they decide the new name to be), have a nice day!" Inappropriate words might be used, I cannot confirm or deny.

What about reducing your heritage as a twin cities resident to a symbol like your twins TC logo.

maby you are referring to the old Dickinson state nickname. The Savages. Which in my opinion was the most badass nickname ever.

You know, there is just no way I can agree with this. Flagrant political correctness never got the world anywhere. It has been the logo for almost 80 years, if the actual Sioux were so "offended" by it, the logo would have never been there in the first place. The fact is that a bunch of Bureaucrats passed this.

I just hope that Ralph Englestads benefactors tell them either the Sioux logos stay or find a new hockey arena.
 
The school may retire the nickname and logo. However, the Sioux tradition will still be very present for many years to come.

There is a strong allegiance to the Sioux brand and nothing will stop people from wearing their "Fighting Sioux" apparel or waving huge flags with the Sioux logo on it at any UND event.

Also, the Englestad arena is privately owned and operated and will more than likely continue to operate as though nothing has chaned.

Through the alumni, students and fans I think the school will always remain the Fighting Sioux. The NCAA and state board of higher education can do what they want, but people will still recognize UND as the Sioux.

There is going to be a lot of hostility from students, alumni and fans toward the NCAA and state board for ruling on this before it had run its due process. More reason for people to buy/wear/display fighting sioux merchandise.

UND will continue to be the Fighting Sioux, sanctioned or not.
 
Piper Aircraft Company: Warrior, Seminole, Arrow, Cherokee, Chieftan, Navajo....guess Piper should be forced to rename all its aircraft.

Not just the Dakota's are named after tribes: About half of the states are from Native American backgrounds

Alabama-Couchatta Indian tribe
Arkansas
Connecticut
Kansas
Iowa- Ioway Indian Tribe
Indiana- "Land of Indians"!!
Massachusetts
Missouri Indian Tribe
Texas
Oklahoma
Ohio

...just to name a few.

Guess we gotta rename half our states too because I find it all offensive!
 
This thing is a lot deeper than some are making it. ND has two Sioux tribes. Spirit Lake and Standing Rock. SL voted heavily in favor of it. SR decided to abastain and let the vote go to the ND SBOHE. Lower education if you ask me. The were heavily pressed by UND president Kelley and AD Brian Faison. The SL tribe has recently written a letter to the Gov. to get keep the name....(get that if you aren't following an actual ND Sioux tribe is the biggest pursuer in keeping the name). The SR tribe has been stuck in politics for years because the leaders keep pushing off a vote. They know it will pass.

If you are so damn quick to throw out the Racist card i have a card for you. How about a bunch of white people once again thinking they know whats better for the tribes than they do.

Another thing. One of the biggest reasons for this early push BEFORE the NCAA mandate is to try and get into this D1 Summit Conference. Which is pointless because it is only for UND's sports that all lose money. Anything but Football and Hockey. If you are interested in quality info check out www.siouxsports.com these people have been following this stuff well. I know atleast one of you on this site...cough BR
