Does Jerry knowingly and intentionally do dumb things? I don't believe he does. He thinks he's doing everything correct. When he tries to explain what happened in the comment section, he doesn't know what the hell he's talking about.

I think he knew he was bad at instrument flying, hence the panel upgrade and semi-conscious incompetence, but he has no idea how to work the automation properly so he's back at unconscious incompetence.
