After UND got it re-approved to be used nation wide back in October, our Sioux callsign is no longer going to be used outside of the local area. This change goes into effect at midnight.
Probably some indian whined about it. More likely it wasn't even an indian it was some angry liberal activist who complained on their behalf sort of how they complained about the hockey team's name.
I must admit the "Sioux" callsign usage outside the area was very convenient but, at the same time, was pretty damn gay. I'm kinda happy we're going back to the normal callsigns. The "Sioux" callsign has the name 'student pilot' written all across it.
I agree with Angel...it seemed like more of a hassle to me. Instead of making things easier when I went outside the local area with the Sioux call sign, I'd spend more time explaining who the hell I was.
Of course that was when it went into effect the first time a couple of years ago. Not sure what if it was more recognized this time around.
Same for me, when I took the Warrior to MSP with my flight instructor we had to briefly explain who we were, then on my solo x-c to PKD someone in the area so "GO SIOUX!"...I guess that's the only advantage...but disadvantage is no one knows why the heck a Warrior got a call sign or who the h3ll "Sioux Airlines" is.
