Sim partner canned

After Sim 7 of 8 he got called by the training head and told they did not wish for him to continue. He was behind the airplane a bit but I didn't think it was that bad! Must be a sign of the times that he was let go instead of being offered an extra sim. Sheesh, three months in and then good bye!

Sorry to hear that. It sucks to make it that far and get let go. It happened to a friend of mine. Which airline are you at?

Heck, some guys bombed right out of ground school back in the day when I was a Southernjets neophyte. Granted, not many, but it's not uncommon.

But it could be anything. Something could have popped up on the background check, training, whatever

My sim partner, got let loose after she couldn't handle V1 cuts. She was crazy book smart, but a little behind in the plane/sim. They gave her 3 extra sessions and she just couldn't overcome them.

I think he'd be good with an extra sim or two and they used to be good about offering such things. He was way behind but most are coming from a Seminole to a CRJ. That and with over two months of ground school, one gets a little rusty.

I've also heard rumor that the FAA is scrutinizing our training after a few too many runway incursions at ATL last month. Maybe that played into it but it still sucks! Welcome to the airlines, eh?

That's too bad. My roommate during training at Republic washed out of the sim and is sittin' back at home. I felt bad, but he brought it on himself. He spent most of indoc/systems drinking and not hitting the books and was a train wreck during CPT's in not knowing any flows or callouts.

How many hours did this person have? What's the deal with the runway incursions in ATL??

He had 1000+, all instruction in Florida. He also joined the group for every study session and we both spent several hours a day going over flows. Until we hit the sim, he was no more behind than I was.

The big two incursions last month (January? has it been that long? were: 1) we had a lifeguard flight who got cleared to the front of the line for taxi but went to R instead of L or vice-versa. When given the take off clearance, they read back the correct runway then took off on the wrong one causing someone else to go-around. (I don't think this one made major news) 2) our plane was #3 to taxi across an active runway. #1 and #2 were cleared across and #3 told to hold short. Our pilots read back the instructions correctly but crossed anyway causing the aircraft taking off to abort. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2008_Atlanta_Runway_Incursion

gtpilot: You need to check your facts. The incursion with the lifeguard flight did not happen this year. With the first incursion this year, DL523 did not abort their takeoff. It is also important to note that both pilots of the Acey flight were in no ways, "new". For anyone to criticize the training department is just ridiculous. The second Acey incursion in Atlanta this year involved an Acey flight that had a high-speed abort after being cleared for takeoff with a Skywest RJ stuck on the runway.

My bad, the lifeguard was another incident - honestly too brain fried at the moment. Please note that I called the scrutiny a rumor and, while ridiculous, the FAA likes to punish, even if misguided.

BTW, welcome to the forum. Regards!

Took my check ride today with the instructor we did our first two sims with. He was asked about my partner and told management that from sim 1 & 2 he didn't think my partner would make it. So, no extra sims based on our first instructor's recommendation.

Then I take the check-ride with another guy who's done 14 sims!! My ride goes great by he bombs out big time. Bummer!

That's a good point. He may never know the actual reason why he was let go.

It's weird, some people fail training somewhere only to blaze through in others. I don't think a bust here or there is any indication whether someone will do well or not.
