Silver (Gulfstream) or non-flying aviation job?

The pay isn't great, but the company treats the pilots quite well from what I've seen so far. I've seen what somebody called "abuse" firsthand, and what they wrote as their "story" and what actually happened were two VERY different things.

Dude, I am so calling B.S. on this statement. I PERSONALLY knew all 4 pilots that got shafted in the December class. You act like an expert and are only repeating the B.S. Lilly tells people. If a company tells a guy it is strongly suggested he not go to a relative's funeral then cans him for doing it -and don't forget about the pilot in the SAAB upgrade class that got downgraded for taking care of sick relatives what sort of company do you call that? I'm getting my time in and getting out of this place.

Heh. WHAT about Silver sounds like "fun"? The crap pay? The horrible treatment? The stories of abuse? Maybe it's the two leg commute you think sounds so awesome? Mark my words, if this guy takes the Gulfstream job, he will last two, maybe three months with that commute and quit. $10...any takers?

+1, Silver still has a way to go.

Wait...wait. Why wasn't Great Lakes brought up in all this?!? You can make even less, commute from Farmingdale? to Billings, maybe a 3 legger? QOL is great. 13.hr, and you can fly the all mighty 1900.

I couldn't care less what management would want me to think. I'm talking about what I have personally seen, specifically with one person, both at the hotel and training center. I was able to sit in on a pre oral and what he said online and what happened were two different things. THe rest I cannot comment on because I was not there. Unless you sat in on a checkride that somebody failed, whether you knew them or not, I don't believe you can comment on that either.

There is a reason Great Mistakes and Gulfstreem (aka Silver) have the reputation they have, they earned it. A handful of pilots don't give an airline a reputation like that. It takes a lot of crap over the years for those airlines to build it.

Back to the original quesiton: Take the 135 job, you will have a better QOL, pay off/down your bills, start saving for retirement and not have to starve with a hellish commute. Being a CFII will teach you a lot and you can end up using those skills down the road when you do get to an airline if that is the way you still want to go. I know several corportate pilots and they have awesome jobs, with great QOL, PAY, and equipment; they would never dream of going to the Airlines. 135/91K/91 can be just as rewarding as flying big metal. It is just what the individual ends up liking.

I'd rather be the most junior FO at mainline than the most senior captain at a regional, for reasons obvious.

That's crazyness. $105/hr and great QOL would be hard to leave for a flow through that will take you almost a decade as an FO to break $105, not to mention all the 4 am reserve phone calls you will get.

I don't think I'm that crazy. I'd rather have a job that could be outsourced, than the outsourced job. Different risks.

Back to the question, if your hearts not in it than do the 135 I like silver and enjoy my time here but if my heart was not in it and the drive was not here I would be miserable and hate my life. Yes you can upgrade quick and get lots of time which you wouldn't have a problem with the ATP mins by Aug but if you aren't happy then you lose the joy of flying. follow you feeling Luke.

Are your pants on fire? First off, the company gave him a oral that wasn't sanctioned. When I was going through new hire training they didn't give me or anyone else that. Second, I HIGHLY DOUBT you sat in on it, as a matter of fact, I KNOW you didn't sit in on it, I had to talk to Karen and the only person I saw was my bud, Lilly, and the ground instructor who told him after that crap went down he didn't have his priorities straight-he should have not gone home to the funeral. Oh yeah, and Lilly after it was done lied on him saying he had a bad attitude, etc.

So what do you have to say for the girl that reported cheating and Lilly told everyone that she would be fired? And was for "failing" her oral? What about the other 2 pilots that Donald Laughlin screwed in Orlando? And the SAAB upgrade- banning a guy for taking care of his sick mother so they tell him he is not allowed to upgrade to the SAAB and they are riding his butt.

Newbie, you defend this place, but wait till you get out here on the line.

Ummm... Ya sure he should have went home but if you go home keep studying so you can at least answer: (insert name here) where are the static ports (this may be important if you do a preflight and need to make sure they are clear)? and then they answer... Ready... ON THE AIRPLANE...ok (insert name here) WHERE ON THE AIRPLANE (like my first question was not obvious enough I was looking for the location on the airplane) I don't know That had transpired before the systems exam. Just one instance of things so yes if you can't answer simple questions then you can't fly the plane here and I hope no where.

I know he could answer those questions and did, I studied with the guy and questioned him to 100% on both limitations and memory items. Lilly failed him for not knowing sys and om books 100%- every page memorized- then the other instructor tells him he should not have gone home and since he did and showed the company they were not his number 1 priority he would
be given the oppurtunity to go somewhere else. Study while your at home for a FUNERAL? What are you, a vulcan?

But he has moved on to much better things. This crap you just posted- do you have hard facts to back it up or did you "sit in" on it(Oral) like the other guy? What about the folks Captains have told me about on the line that went home for funerals and the company tells them not to come back? And why did they give him an oral that the company plainly says they no longer do? Also, since when did we get a pre-oral before the sys exam? You and I both know the company doesn't do that. Are your pants on fire too?

I get a really hostile vibe from Silver. Even dealing with them on the telephone trying to figure out if we're ever going to get a classmate. There were about 10 of use that made it all the way thru over 6 weeks ago. And we haven't heard a peep from them. It's little things like that that make me question the validity of the company in general.

With the new NRPM, having (within the next year) been a graduate from an aviation school, with an aviation degree I'd only need 1000 total time for an ATP. If I were to take the desk job and get my CFI, I would only need to build about 600 hours. I could do that before I finished a 2 year contract at Silver.

Well, since you haven't been offered a job at Silver, I'd say your decision is pretty easy to make.

I should have clarified. I was talking about a point where he stayed behind for extra help on questions in preparation for the oral. My bad there. I didn't know he had one with the instructor and another pilot also. When I staled to him at the hotel, he had the same problems with questions that he had a few days prior during (what I called) a pre oral and SIT session.

Slow your roll dude.

JetSuite > Silver Airways. Listen to the people that have been in this situation before and that currently work there. However, sometimes we have to do things we don't necessarily want to do to get where we want.

I have a two friends that work JetSuite by SNA, they both love it. One actually worked at signature for a bit and ended up going back.

I would take you on boris if his heart was in it.

My heart is in aviation. There's no doubt, but this situation makes me wonder if sacrificing another year or so and getting a CFI and then getting in somewhere with an easier commute or none at all, and slightly more money.

Basically why I was asking for opinions to begin with. I've seen guys commute one leg to an RJ job and become disgruntled.

Just to play Devils Advocate, I've seen mainline pilots with no commute bitch Cory.

Personally, I think Jet Suite may be the best choice for you given your options. Getting your CFI would be great and is something I would like to do also. If you did come to Silver, I know you would also thoroughly enjoy it too.

It all depends on what you have going on in life. For me, I'm young, single, and my only tie is a mortgage payment in Chicago. I'm able to afford that and food as well as other luxuries on my pay, so that's why I chose this route. It all depends.
