Silly things that happen on the job...

Hondo Calrissian

I love chicken wings and beer....
So, I thought it would be fun to post things that happen on the job, this can be odd, weird, crazy or just plane funny things that you have heard from co-workers, passengers or pilots.

1) I once had a passenger miss a flight....his reasoning what he thought he departure time was based on the time zone they lived, they lived in EST....Needless to say, they were not happy when I told them that wasn't true and charged them the appropriate fee.

The lived in EST and were flying from a CST airport? That would put them at the airport early. Or EST and this was in euro-land?

I once had someone want to bring an Air-Conditioner unit on the aircraft. They literally walked up to the ticket counter with a AC unit and wanted to take it to Cancun. The only reason operations found out is that the agent called us in the SOC and asked if they could carry it on. We told them no because we didn't have HAZMAT at the time.

Mind you this was not a "normal" airline either. It was a vacation airline which made it all the more random.

On my last day before my furlough (different airline), the shift supervisor I always worked with threw myself and the crew scheduler, who was also getting the axe, a pizza party. That was neat!

Epic!

Not sure it would be appropriate to go into too much detail, but suffice it to say an airline I used to work for blew up a $2M engine because they (and by they I do NOT mean the line mechanics nor MX control) refused to follow a flow chart and refused to take the advice of the engine manufacturer.

Its ACARS like this that bother me. Not the mile high part, but the part where one employee wants to pass of the difficult conversation to another employee. If I saw something wrong, I'd take care of it. I expect others to do the same.

Eh, my book says you let the CRO handle it (at least the last time I read it). It's not the wild west and it's someone's job (sometimes) to handle that. Not a terrible idea to bring people in on the problem and make sure you handle the situation correctly.

First, let me first make sure we're on the same page. If CRO is a ground agent, then your approach is wrong. If you want LEOs at the gate, I'd agree.

First to know, best to fix.

I've had that happen on one of my flights.

The FA should be done her job. Passing it Onto the pilots who re simply going to lass it to dispatch isn't going to amount to a hill of beans.

Hah awesome.

On a side track, what does the dt/ddl/ all the numbers mean? I work ops so I get acars messages but they don't explain the stuff other than ETA and special requests.

Not sure on the DT/DDL but it's usually the nearest facility followed by the day and time. In this case it was sent at or near YYZ on the 23rd @1541z

Yeah that was it means. I of course put some XXXX in there. It would read a lot easier if I had not DE-identified the flight.
