Sidestep

Hey for any of you cfii’s I’ve been asking around and just had a question about side step maneuvers while say on approach. I have looked in the aim and it doesn’t answer what my question is. I’m just thinking say your cleared for the ils runway 8L, sidestep to runway 8R. When you get the atis weather is good for the sidestep minimums, but say you never get the other runway in sight, do you continue the approach for runway 8L, or go missed.

Huh? I'm not sure I understand.

You get to the MAP and you don't have the landing runway environment in sight and you are asking whether you can continue the approach to the runway that you are not cleared to land on?

Basically, well even say you have the landing environment in sight for runway 8l and that was the ils you were cleared for, but they gave you the approach for 8r, you arrive at the map with only runway 8l in sight, when you were cleared for ils 8l and sidestep 8r, does that make sense.

yes, but the runway you have in sight is not the one that you were cleared for, i know its kind of a funky situation

Sounds like you are trying to land on a runway you weren't cleared to land on, so I would say you should go missed and then land on the runway in conjuntion with the approach (ILS 8L = land on 8L)

It is. If it's an ILS 8L and you are cleared to sidestep to 8R, there is a =reason= for that. It may be a disabled aircraft or other traffic on the runway, inoperative lights, or something else.

I agree. If you get to the MDA you may only continue below if:

(this comes from FAR part 91.175 c. 1.) "(t)he aircraft is continuously in a position which a descent to a landing on the intended runway can be made at a normal rate of descent using normal maneuvers, and or operations conducted under part 121 or part 135 unless the descent rate will allow touchdown to occur within the touchdown zone of the runway of intended landing."

The fact that you were cleared an approach to 8L sidestep to land on 8R means that you ONLY have clearance to land on 8R. If you can't see enough to safely land on 8R you have to go missed.
