I've got no problem with user fees. I've got no problem with aviation being expensive. I personally feel that each should pay for the services they use rather than having one group subsidize the whole deal. I tend to lean towards privatization of ATC as well!
I don't agree with jtrain's assessment though except the pc part.

It's already too easy to become a pilot. We need to raise standards rather than find ways to ensure the bar remains low.

I agree with you 100%. It's always concerned me that instead of looking for ways to be the best at what we do, folks look for ways to make things easier, to get ahead with the least amount of work, etc. Raising standards would be a good thing for every segment of this industry for every pilot that isn't a hack.

As someone who is not a hack, I don't like hacks. But you must admit you threw the baby out with the bathwater a bit there, and it sounded just a tad on the High and Mighty™ side.

in europe, it cost 100$ to follow an ILS, 20$ per landing.
5 t&G =100$ plus ILS to pay.
one hour in a seneca, 1000$ per hour.
most of you will give up.

Perhaps it's extreme, but look at the system Europe has. They have all but killed GA with their ridiculous user fees. Aviation is already expensive enough, if user fees are implemented, I'd imagine the same thing will happen over here.
It might take awhile, but it will happen should they be implemented.

User fees are fine with me as long as everyone is affected, not just GA. The FAA needs to realize that outrageous taxes on flight training individuals may put a burden on the entire flight training industry. Loss of fuel sales, loss of fees from less traffic, loss of jobs because people can no longer afford to train or leisure fly, FBO's go out of business, CFI's out of work, flight schools closing, insurance companies charging a lot more in premiums from the loss of business. If their goal is to shut down funding to a few airports out in the boonies then fine. I say do it. However, overtaxing GA is a bad idea in general.

Jeez....what would it take for some career pilots to realize that some people just want to do this for fun...I'm saying this as a career pilot too (well almost...). My observations tell me that around 60-70% of GA pilots do make an effort to stay current and proficient and are good, safe pilots. Hobby pilots are VERY important for the aviation industry, they keep FBOs, flight schools and free lance CFIs in business which all create jobs. The day we don't have weekend warriors is the day CFIs don't have enough students, FBOs close leaving many without jobs and airports close. Not good for the economy...
This being said, I have no problem with raising standards (maybe raising currency requirments or making the flight review annual...I actually know several dangerous GA pilots who get flight reviews annually and IPCs every 6 months to make sure they are safe
) because the non-current jackwagons are kinda scary...
