Should I consider crew scheduling?

I got my license in october,and have only had 1 135 offer but turned it down .Every 121 has either out right rejected me or ignored me ...I kinda got desperate and applied for crew scheduling at skywest and two days later they are giving me a video interview already.Sheesh I havent heard from endeavor for 2 weeks for the dispatcher job I applied to... WHat do you guys think? Im 24 yrs old with a bachelors, but no aviation experience.I am willing to crew schedule if it will help me get my foot in the door.Also skywest is only 4.5 hours from my family in california,so thats a plus.

It really depends...

crew scheduling may get you a foot in the door at a 121 that could lead to dispatching but dispatching and crew scheduling are very different job wise. Dispatching is all about weather, notams, and airports where crew scheduling is all about hours the crew has worked and 117 issues.

If I were you I would just try and wait it out and try for a 121 or 135 operator. I'm sure someone will pick you up soon. I think there will be a few regionals hiring this year and you can get good experience at one then move on to a bigger company.

I would agree. Scheduling doesn't really relate well to dispatching. Not only that, but I personally would hate all the phone calls that they get and all the angry pilots they have to deal with. Not only that but scheduling usually starts at a couple of dollars less than dispatch if pay is important to you.
 
Do it. I know of several success stories of schedulers turned dispatchers..even at their own company they were scheduling at. Those who rag on Skeds probably have never spent a day in the life of a scheduler and don't understand the trials and tribulations they go through to run an on time safe airline

I only want to be a scheduler for a few months then hopefully skywest would hire me or another regional.

I know it is very different,but I want to build connections and get my foot in the door!I have applied to endeavor and compass 2 weeks ago for dispatch...Havent heard anything from them!!

Most regionals will want you to do a year in scheduling,also pro tip,don't come out and say you want to only work in Skeds for a few months so you can transfer to dispatch. Won't likely get you hired

If it was crew scheduling at Southwest or Delta...I might say to go for it, since they like to hire dispatchers internally (especially DL, although evidently they are primarily hiring graduates of their own school these days.) However, personally, I would never choose crew scheduling. I've had to do limited amounts of it many years ago when I worked at a regional, and it truly sucks IMO. Skywest is a good regional, but I would hang in there to get a dispatch position, even if it's not with them, rather than working in scheduling and hoping to transfer over later. The first dispatch job is always the hardest one to get.
 
One bonus of scheduling is never having to worry about the Feds pulling your ticket for having a deal...

I wouldn't even do Delta. Most of the hiring i have heard about lately in scheduling is through DGS and is considered contract. As such you are not really considered internal for dispatch and I think I also heard they don't have paid vacations or sick time. Like i said though, this is just secondhand information.

Allegiant is hiring for crew scheduler,so I might consider that!

I worked scheduling for 2 months 1 time... it was miserable. BUT... if you are trying to get into the industry and haven't had any luck with dispatch then definitely go the scheduling route.
 
I was a scheduler for about 20 months. There’s no right way to start. It’s a tough and pretty much thankless job. I do believe employers see time in scheduling and recognize you’re in it for the long haul. Don’t let these neigh sayers who were never schedulers tell you what they do or how it doesn’t translate. Perspective is key, and you’re young enough to spend a year or so there move to Skywest Dispatch which is very respected. It’s the long game, diversify yourself from others. I’m a scheduling success story.
 
I know someone at a 121 supplemental who started in scheduling and later moved to DX. He said that the experience was invaluable because he got to know and build relationships with the pilots he would later dispatch.
