Shooting Aboard An AAL Flight . . .

go FAM's!
This is a good thing? A man was shot and *killed*. But he didn't have a bomb.

:: Douses self in flame retardant ::

Before I dig myself into a hole, the FAM was acting in accordance with training, as far as I can dig up on news sites. That's his/her job. I have no problem with that. The training on the other hand...??

Justify the program, prove to the general public that it's safe etc etc. DO a little good towards pushing that armed pilot bill along...

The program is justified if they never have to shoot somebody. Their existence should be that of a deterrent.

That's almost like saying that police officers need to regularly shoot people to justify their weapons.

I agree..

Who would wish for someone to be hurt/killed?

Are you sick? Yes

yeah, why... I'd much rather see them blow up an airplane than get blasted by an air marshall :banghead:

Nah, I don't particularly like cops :)

It'll probably come out tomorrow that the guy is mentally challenged and really had no idea what he was saying/doing. ****storm to follow.

Hrmm..keep up the arrogance like Mathew said.

What's your picture of a suicide bomber? Middle aged middle eastern male?

No, not at all. It's a young, Middle Eastern male.

There is no way that a LEO can tell whether an individual running amok in an enclosed space threatening lives is either mentally ill or a verifiable threat. However, it always comes out in the media, "How could that police officer kill a mentally ill man?" Well because he was acting violent and threatening people, and in the heat of moments like this you cannot distinguish the difference.

People cry that we must treat those with disabilities the same as those without. But then when someone with a disability or mental disorder does something or says something threatening, we are supposed to make the distiniction? I don't buy it. May be holding an unpopular opinion here, but that's just my take. If he was in fact running the aisles with a backpack, saying he had a bomb, then attempted to open said backpack when told by law enforcement to "freeze", he was in error. This then lead to them using lethal force to protect the lives of all innocents on board and in the immediate area.

Living with someone in law enforcement for my entire life (my Dad), I will tell you that the last thing that any cop wants to do is draw his weapon. Psychiatrist tests try to weed out the gunslingers. Most cops try to avoid physical confrontation at all costs, until it is necessary to use it. This would be a perfect case of when an officer felt it was necessary to use the last resort.

Well if we think like that, another attack is going to happen, but it wont be a middle eastern male.

Why does it always come to racial profiling? Damn..dont people understand?

Lets watch black people...they are known for stealing.

Like that?:banghead:

44 year old US citizen isn't the typical modern suicide bomber.

Ah, the different times we live in. Who here can recall the first ever commercial airline bombing in the USA ?

Continental Airlines Flight 11 was a Boeing 707 en route from Chicago to Los Angeles on May 22, 1962.

A bomb went off in the rear lavatory about 9:30 pm local time. As a result, the tail came off and the plane crashed on a farm near Unionville, Missouri. All 45 onboard died.

The FBI deduced that one of the passengers, Thomas G. Doty, who was 34 at the time, planted the device after buying a life insurance policy from Mutual of Omaha for $150,000, the maximum available.

*****************************

What scares me is the fact that you would only consider looking at middle eastern people who would bring a bomb on a plane, and that no one else would do it.

Anyone is capable of ANYTHING ! I don't care if the guy is white, black, brown, yellow, pink, or Smurf.... search 'em like the rest of the group, and if (s)he makes a bomb threat, then carry out the appropriate action.

Awesome POST!!!:bandit:

Thank you!!

No, if I was a TSA screener, I would be primarily interested in screening beautiful women, and my next break. The last person I would want to see is a terrorist.

Hindsight is always 20/20.

Quick story about reacting to a situation. I was in Reno a few years ago on a layover and someone forcibly grabbed my arm tightly from behind and said "Hey boy, gimme your wallet".

I didn't even look back and instinctively put my left hand on my right fist and jabbed it back, trying my best to ram his navel into his spine and ran forward.

I turned around and it was the captain I was flying with! I didn't even apologize because he should have known better than to walk up behind me and goof around in a threatening manner, especially when I was on a dark street late at night walking back to the hotel.

Mentally disturbed or not, if a person makes a high-level threat and starts acting in a threatening manner, all bets are off.

The end statement is very true.

But i am HONESTLY laughing so hard right now reading that story.:cwm27:

I've done the same but of course not to my captain, to my bro!:p

DING DING DING! Correct Answer!

I really want to know, why as of late (like the past week or so) has there been so many posts related to race and ethnicity? It seems as quite a few threads on the boards now have turned into very in-depth and heated discussions about race issues and racial profiling. Many members coming out with very strong opinions on these issues, as well as some threads where it quickly turns into a racial debate after someone reads too much into a post.

I was thinking about making this a thread of its own in the lav, but decided against it. You really need to realize that in this business you will be working with every breed of human on the planet. White, Black, Arabic, Asian, Indian, Straight, Gay, Bi, Left-wingers, Right-wingers, Southern Baptists, Muslims, Agnostics, Catholics, Athesits, Men, Women, people who smell good, people who smell bad, pretty people, ugly people, handicapped people, mentally ill people, young kids, the elderly... the list goes on. There is no room for these discussions in the cockpit, and these strong opinions must be quelled. I know this is only an internet message board, but remember aviation is a small community. Voicing your strong opinions here will in fact reflect on you in real life.

Growing up I was subjected to many in my neighborhood (and even family) who have very strong opinions on race and various ethnic groups. I even have friends who hold similiar opinions. It's up to you to decide if you'll allow their shortsightedness to influence your own opinions.

For some of you with your loud claims of screening only young arabic males, what would you do when a young arabic male is your captain? One of my best friends is half arabic and an airline pilot. He actually changed his name because of the backlash he recieved in this industry. A former Marine, and damn fine individual, turned on because of his name. Sickening. His father, a very senior captain at a major airline, has received even worse treatment. He is 100% arabic, with a strong accent, and arabic name. Would you disrespect him in the cockpit due to his ethnicity in this current environment? After 9/11 he did receive backlash from crews. Be better than that.

I hope these ethnic arguments are just a passing phase.
