Shined Shoes? Ironed Uniform?

The guys that wipe down every cockpit they get into crack me up....half the time they hand me a sani-wipe and I wipe down my side too just to humor them. Too hypochodriac-like if you ask me. Honestly just wash your hands before you eat and you'll be fine....you can't get sick from touching something unless your rub your hand all over an orifice or mucus membrane. You guys must think the rest of us sit around picking buggers and wiping them all over the thrust levers.

I say just show up, look nice, and don't smell. Honestly, my shoes don't shine by the 4th day and I really doubt if I'm gonna sit around my hotel room and care about it. If I get a stain on my shirt, I just hope its small enough so that my tie covers it or I'll wear the coat. Hats?? well its required so I've got to sport it and make the best of it. I wouldn't go as far as saying that management can disrespect pilots because of the condition of their uniform though. When I see a pilot in the airport looking like he was just run over by a freight train, I don't look down on him in any way. I figure he's probably taken a huge paycut, lost his pension, and now doesn't quite see it as "livin the dream" anymore. And who am I as a post 911 regional pilot to judge him in any way. This thread makes me think of that scene in Austin Powers when his girlfriend is unpacking her suitcase and everything is vaccuum packed....NERD ALERT!

So if you don't do it, who will? Do you think there is anyone that is PAID to clean the cockpit?

Think again ...

Actually....yes, we can request cockpit cleanings for an aircraft if it is needed, and there are cleaners that do it. I believe it is done on a scheduled basis every 9 months or so.

I can see wiping the stuff down if it's DIRTY, but it's overkill to wipe the whole place down everytime you step in a cockpit just because you're paranoid about germs. But hey, that's just me...to each his own.

Actually, the rampers in MEM are supposed to clean the cockpits on the RONs.......

[/ QUOTE ]

Rampers at a lot of stations are supposed to do a lot of things. Like in Houston, they're supposed to meet the aircraft upon its arrival.

That wouldn't be funny if it weren't so true!

Unless things have changed in the last 5 years - rampers DO NOT clean cockpits. They are supposedly prohibited from entering the cockpit for insurance, safety and security reasons. Just imagine if they fired up the APU by accident. (And it wouldn't be that hard to do in the CRJ - just push two buttons.)

The only time cockpits MIGHT get cleaned is in maintenance, by mechanics, who are certified to work in the cockpit. I still am highly doubtful that any mechanic will be spending time cleaning cockpits though.

I don't look down on him - I just figure that he's a lazy slob that doesn't care how he looks.

From the sound of some of these posts, it would be pretty accurate!

How about this one, JT. "Rampers do not clean cockpits at MESA." Remember, different airlines have different policies. XJT trains their ramp crews in cleaning a/c, including the cockpit. They've got the handy wipes as well as a little vacuum. Whether they actually do their jobs or not, that's up to the individual stations. When I was in training in IAH for the job, it was a "This is what you touch, this is what you NEVER touch, make sure the battery switch is off."

Vanity will only get you so far.

It will get you slightly further than sloppiness, though!

Let me put it that way - the COCKPIT PANELS were NEVER CLEANED. It wasn't just Mesa. In all aircraft they knew what button to push to give them ground power, but they were NEVER allowed to touch anything else on the cockpit PANELS.

Once in a while I'm sure somebody picked up some trash, maybe once in a blue moon wiped a seat in the cockpit (but I doubt it.)

I am still convinced that no one cleaned any flight controls or panels except pilots.

John, you don't have any recent experience with ExpressJet nor the training program for rampers. Steve does. Let the voice of experience talk.

Shoot, rampers fire up the APU lots during RON's. All you've got to do is train them.

As far as the uniform goes...Lets say you get it back from the cleaners, then have to double deadhead on loaded flights and then have a 2 hour sit somwhere...hard to keep it crisp. I try my best though honestly. As far as the screens being unreadable, maybe ive seen a couple here and there, but I dont make a habit of cleaning everything insight.

I had a 1day trip (no spare unis) about 2 months ago down to MCO and back. During the walkaround I managed to slice my back on some part of the airplane and of course it really hurt. I tried to play it cool, but it was tough to do since it ripped my shirt and left about a foot long streak of greese. NICE.
