Sheffield Shutting Down

There was a really nice former Sheffield student who shadowed my class there a few months ago, purportedly to learn to be an instructor there himself. Wondered if he might be a future teacher and/or owner but apparently not.

You cant sell the operating cert like the airlines do when they transfer or takeover AOCs?

They can. Someone I know close to me had a discussion with me if I wanted to possibly take over his school in the future. I'm sure a transfer of ownership is possible

I have had this conversation with the FAA...you have to get your school certified from scratch.

You can use another company's materials, but the school's certificate cannot be transferred.

It's a little bit of a sticking point with a lot of school owners...and sometimes people get a little angry when they start spending money and find out they have to go through the whole certification process themselves and can't jusy buy the certificate.

The reference for the Application to the FAA and the certification process can be found in the 8900.1a

Yeah, I was kind of sad to hear this...the current owner of Sheffield was my main instructor there back when I got my license in the 90s. I wish everyone there the best. Fortunately there are other choices out there, but I'm very happy with the education I got at Sheffield...and it set me on a path to a great career doing a job that I still enjoy almost 30 years later.

Honestly suprised that wouldnt be allowed so long as you knew the materials provided. Airlines swap AOCs all the time.

I was a recent graduate from Sheffield(May 2024) and I just got to know Eric and Brett. It was shocking new to hear them close down after next year😥

Hopefully their website and study materials will stay up after he retires?

I didn't attend Sheffield but enjoyed using their ADX app for interviews and reviewing ADX topics. It's always sad when our institutions fade away.

As a Sheffield alumnus (Class of May, 2017), this is sad news. Getting my ADX there was one of the most challenging, yet rewarding, things I ever did in my life! I'm only now finding out about this because I was contemplating going back for a refresher the near future. I wish Eric, Brett, and everyone else there the best. This is sad... :(
