Sheble for CFI

I am looking at the Nevada location.

Anyone who has gone through this rating there, care to comment?

I have seen a few here and there say they have done CFI training there.

The lowdown on the area, hotels around, cheap places to eat. If you actually got it done in 8 days, etc. Ideally, I'd get a ride down, so wouldn't have a car with me to get around town, so everything in walking distance would be ideal.

I'm getting frustrated with stuff locally, and have decided to just go out and do it elsewhere, to force me a bit into dedicating all my time to it, and this place is near the top of a fairly small list.

Those that haven't gone, I am aware there are other places, like ATP, but I'm not looking at doing multi at this time. Thanks.

I new a guy that went there for his Comm ME add on and all 3 instructor ratings. He liked it because there weren't the distractions of home.

Josh,
I did my CFI there.. and I suspect my posts last year mightbe ones you read.

There is not much within walking distance. While I was there, there were one or two folks with no cars. They seemed not to have a problem if they were staying at the same hotels as other students. I stayed at a hotel about 9 miles away that gave a good rate for flight students. Kitchenettes and grocery stores was all I used for food. Some did the cheap food at the casinos, but to be honest, I felt so busy that it was here-nor-there that I was actually IN Las Vegas.

I finished in 8 days. Day 8 was the checkride and since my oral was the evening before, I was out-and-walknig by 9:30 AM.. so more like 7.5 days.

My decision to go to Shebles was based in part cuz I had a CFI job waiting for me, so I had something to 'accelerate' to.

In sum, I would characterize the experience as an 8 day checkride.. you pony up and do things their way and work HARd, then they treat you like an adult on your checkride day. You whine and try to do things your way, then it can get rocky from there.

One little thing that did bug me.. is that the minute you get there, you are somehow made to feel like everyone knows what the training plan is except you. By day 3 or 4 you realize that everyone feels the same as you. Things feel disorganized and random, but all come together in the end, so if you go, PM me and I can fill you on specifics on what it will be like.

Also, 8 days goes by fast and you feel that clock beating down on you. Shebles has two locations and they are always ferrying planes from one to another. Often, they grab a student to come along and fly this flight. this would be fine if you were time building but what you really want to be doing is working on maneuvers. So, if you have been waiting patiently to get up in the air, and they pull you on one of these ferry flights, assert yourself that you paid big bucks and there are only 8 days and a 1 hour straight and level flight is not why you are there. My Shebles CFI experience was like 12 hours or so of flight time. Do the math and thats pretty damn expensive C-172 rental!!!! So, make sure you assert yourself.

Are any Shebles CFI's on jetcareers????

I have a good friend who did his CFI there about a year ago. He was pleased with the program and would recommend it. It's not easy but would be a good introduction to the typical pace of a 121 airline ground school.

The CFI is one rating I don't recommend for the "local FBO". Very few CFI's can do a good job of preparing a student for the CFI oral and checkride. It's best to go to a school that does a lot of CFI's, uses a DE as opposed to the FSDO, and knows what it takes to get guys through the program.

Thanks for the replies so far.

So, anyone got any tips on cheap flights to LAS?
I hardly ever fly commercially, so I'm not even up on what is out there. Other than doing some expedia/cheaptickets kinda searches. I've come up with $199 round trip from SJC to LAS for me. Just wondering if there are any deals out there now. Got a friend who flies for an airline based outta the area, but the closest they come around here is FAT, which is quite a ways from where I live.

Or cheap places to stay, I guess closer to Henderson the better.

Thanks
